1873.0. "Bicycle Across Mass. - BAM" by AXIS::MOLLIN () Fri Mar 08 1991 12:18

Does anyone have information on Bicycle Across Mass.(BAM)?

I've heard that it a 3 or 4 day ride that starts in the Berkshires
and ends along the coast. It is supposed to happen around July 4th
weekend. Overnight accomodations are in college dorms. That's all
    I know.

If you have more details, particularly who to contact to get exact
dates and registration info, please enter it here.

1873.1Pan Mass Challenge?CARROL::SOLONFri Mar 08 1991 13:0912
You may be refering to the Pan-Mass Challenge which is a fund
raiser for the Amer. Heart Assoc. or such. A friend of mine road it
last year. It is a two day ride of approx. 190 miles. It started in
Sturbridge and ended on the cape with an overnight at Mass Maritime
Academy. He started at about 4 or 5 AM and ended mid afternoon each
day. They had rest stops fairly frequently.
Each participant is required to submit some minium quantity of
pledges ($500?) to participate. That's about all I remember except
that he had a great time. He also trained pretty intensely for a
    couple of months prior.

re .1

No, BAM and the Pan Mass Challenge are two different things.

BAM does start in the Berkshires, and go to the coast, and it is run over the
4th of July weekend. That is all that I know about it as I have never done it
or seen information on how to sign up for it.

re. 1

The Pan Massachusetts Chalenge is a world class fund raising event for
the Dana-Farber Institute's Jimmy Fund. Last year, with slighly under
1000 riders, the PMC raised $1,300,000 for the Jimmy Fund. Each rider
guarantees an $800 contribution. This is serious fund raising and makes
it the world's most successful single event cycling fundraiser. That's
the busines side.

The ride side is equally impressive. 500 volunteers shepheard the
cyclists across 190 miles in 2 days. There are water stops every 20 miles
with food, fruit, and other necessities. Volunteer bike mechanics fix
bikes at water stops and on the road - last year a derailure (sp?) was
fixed on the road - free. Vans are canstantly riding the trail of participants
dealing with medical problems and communication issues. During the
ride last year riders were spread 80 miles or so across the state.
All cyclists, at the end of the first day are treated to a massage.

The second day from the Mass Maratime Academy to Provincetown is an
80 mile trip (first day 110 miles from sturbridge. 6am start time) along
the back roads of the cape. Normally a Ferry ride is prvided back to
Boston but last year due to bad weather the ride was cancelled - the
PMC managed to get almost all riders off the cape, back to Boston at
the time advertised for the ferry's arrival. (one bus was 45 minutes late!)

This event is a BLAST!

For information and entry forms write the PMC at PO Box 9, Newton Centre,
MA. 02159 or call them at 617-965-9624

Do it! It's great fun!
1873.4BAM exists ?????USWAV7::CLELANDWhy, I oughta...Wed Mar 13 1991 07:3914
    	Sounds great...

Still though, BAM is an actual organized ride, unknown as it is.

I remember seeing reference to BAM before, but not in this file.
Think it was bicycling magazine, in an article on cross-state
bike-rides. The grand-daddy of them all is the Iowa ride of course.

Perhaps someone from the Charles River Wheelmen can help you out?
Maybe try asking someone at the Boston Area Bicycle Coalition?

BAM exists, but who, what, when, where, I don't know.

I don't know how or why someone in Albuquerque is doing a ride in
Mass. I hope they didn't make a mistake. I'm going to send for the
info and I'll post the details when I get them.
