| Whenever I see gross stupidity like that I always sound off to the
cyclist directly. Usually something along the lines of "you give
cyclists a bad name, so next time I'm on a bike someone could get angry
knock ME over". Makes 'em realise that your not just anti-cycling but
concerned about them aswell.
Either that or "Hey D**khead". Usually gets some response.

I can see him now.
"Let's see. I'm going to be riding my bike at night and in the rain.
I have to get something practical. Should it be the reflective goretex
suit, or the .357? Hmmm."

1838.5 | Missed me a good'un this morning.... | SUSHI::KMACDONALD | Drywall Poster Child for 1990 | Mon Feb 11 1991 12:44 | 10 |
| Close call for the day (now you guys don't have to have one; you may show
your appreciation by sending small bills to my mailstop...)
Driving to work this a.m. about 7, came around a blind-ish corner on the
country road I live on, and ZOWIE, it's 2 kids on MTB's, one riding
down the center of each lane of travel, both headed for me. Managed to
squeeze thru the middle of the two; as I looked in the mirror they were still
riding the same way. Amazing. Makes ya wonder how folks make it to adulthood.

| Well, I first thought I might just let you folks go on about the
tactical nuclear cruise missles this guy was carying - on his low
budget beater - but I hope guess you've made your point by now.
I was the 'stupid SOB' and I guess I'm a dammed fool for letting
some design meetings get in the way of my 'free and easy' lifestyle
of gear-head existance. The facts: I dropped my car off at the
gas-station (2 miles away) and had thrown my Wicked Fat Beater in
the trunk. Yes, I forgot my Giro and THAT was not bright. I had
every intention of getting back to pick up my car before dark, but
the design team needed my help, and MY job comes first. As for the
ride itself, it sucked... and if some 'jerk' had tried to run me off
the road, well, I would have just rode onto the shoulder (or somebody's
front lawn). But I would have been more pissed than Ed, here, because
it's my life, not his vanity.
A much more nobel response would have been to offer some assistance,
since somebody riding in the dark in the rain is not doing it for fun.
I would have appreciated that, and maybe you would have found a new
riding partner. Oh well....
Aggression (verbal or physical) isn't going to help cars and bikes
co-exist. Please remember there's another side to the story. And, to
the dissapointment to most of you... I didn't carry a .44 magnum. You
guys are really brutal!
mark
PS: Ed, were you the one who ran the stop sign at the end of the
parking lot - or was that some other barbarian motorist?

I consider my job important too, but not at the expense of my
life. It's admirable you stayed late to help the effort, but is
is worth risking life or limb?
As an aside, if you're willing to bend for your design team,
couldn't one of them return the favor and drive you 2 miles to
your car?

Nobel perhaps, but risky also. I'd neither offer a ride to a biker
nor accept one offered to me if I was out.

1838.8 | Don't leave home without it (lights, reflective stuff, etc) | BCSE::KLASMAN | ALL-IN-1 DESKtop for PCs. dtn 381-0731 | Mon Feb 11 1991 13:37 | 14 |
| Since you forgot you helmet, you'd probably have forgotten reflective clothing,
lights, etc. I think we all need to remember that it's sometimes tough to
differentiate between an idiot and someone who made a mistake.
I used to think reflective bands, vests, and lights were nerdy. Now my beater
bike (that is, my ultramarathon bike) has reflective tape everywhere and plenty
of lights, and anytime I could possibly be caught out at night, that's the bike
I ride. And I'm quite glad I've got it. I even turn the lights on BEFORE its
dark, just to help insure that I'm seen.
Don't be so sure about someone riding in the rain in the dark needing help... Ed
does it for fun! :^) (hey Ed, long time, no hear...)

| re. -1
You'll never catch me riding at MK around quitting
time even if I'm lit up like a candle. I can't begin to tell
you all of the close calls I had riding in every morning
(wife use to drive me home at night). Seems like drivers
aren't expecting to see bikers (or runners) on those roads.
Perhaps security should run some lunch time seminars to
help make MK (probably ZK also) drivers aware of the dangers
that exist especially in the winter time when snow banks become
another obsticle to driving vision.

1838.10 | Can't spell well either | USWAV7::CLELAND | Why, I oughta... | Wed Feb 13 1991 06:53 | 16 |
| Re - .6/.7
A much more noble spelling of the word "noble" would've been nice.
NOBEL is a humanitarian award given to those who promote the
cause of peace.
No flames here, just a spelling lesson.
Oh, I almost forgot, Obstacle is not spelled "obsticle".
I know what you're saying... "Shut up face..."
Ok, ok, ok...
Regards...

Yo Mark,
It looks like the weather is setting up for some riding
soon. I'm still gonna check out those trails.
There's no bicycle helmet law so it's your skull 8*) I'm surprised
everybody didn't get out and scold you. Aren't you the kid that used to
get his lunch money stolen in school?

1838.13 | yet another close call | SMURF::LARRY | | Wed Jun 19 1996 10:41 | 5 |
| Our lunch time crew had a close call in Dunstable Mass the other day. A
fellow in a red Camarro tried to side swipe the three us. He missed me
by less than an inch. Unfortunately not one us could catch the plate
number.
