1833.0. "Workstand advice required" by AYOV24::RGELVIN () Tue Jan 29 1991 11:08

    I currently own a Leda workstand which I am at last, after many
    promises to myself to do so, decided to replace. There are many
    varieties of workstand out there but after looking at what is on
    offer have come down in favour of either the Blackburn or Park
    rotating clamp type stand.

    The reason for my decision to go for this type of stand as opposed
    to the Bottom bracket cradle/down tube clamp style are as follows.

    The Leda (bottom bracket cradle type) gave me no access to the
    underside of the bottom bracket and also required removal of the
    bottle cage to fix the down tube clamp. This clamp also (in this
    model) clamped the gear cables allowing no movement of the gears.
    Access to the bike was restricted and required a lot of crouching
    and kneeling. I bought this stand about 6 years ago without asking
    for advice on the subject so have learned my lesson.

    On first impressions the rotating clamp style appears to get around
    these problems. It requires some sort of front wheel securing and I
    suppose that I will need to move the clamp position, depending on
    the area of the bike I am working on, in order to obtain rigidity.
    For working on the bottom bracket i.e removing the axle I would
    imagine that the down tube near the BB would be the best clamping
    point.

    Does anyone have any first hand experience of the rotating clamp
    workstands. Are there any other cons to them that I have not spotted
    and what model would you recommend. I know there is one previous
    note on workstands but it was about three years old so I reckoned
    that there must be a few more opinions on the subject by now. Thanks
    in advance for the advice.

    Richard

1833.1I LIKE MINE, BUT...WMOIS::C_GIROUARDTue Jan 29 1991 12:135
     I own a Blackburn with a rotating clamp. I like it.
    If I were to buy another one, however, I would get a Park
    "bike shop" model.

1833.2GO PARK!!WMOIS::N_FLYETue Jan 29 1991 19:3818

    I bought the "shop quality" Park stand and love it. To save the mega
    cost of shipping on the base I went to the scrap metal yard and bought
    a manhole cover. Manhole cover: $20.00. Park base: almost $100.00.
    Recently a bike shop in Palmer went out of business and I bought their
    Park stand for $175.00 with the base. Couldn't pass up that deal.

    I own a tandem and the Park stand works very well. Although the stand
    is not ultra rigid with the tandem the bike is definitely secure.

    A friend of mine used to always rave about how good his Blackburn rack
    was. Since we started to share a house together I don't think he has
    used his Blackburn once. I find the Blackburn unstable for single
    bikes and almost completely useless for the tandem.

1833.3Blackburn is good, Park is bestTEMPE::HUFFAKERTue Jan 29 1991 20:0413
    I have a Blackburn with the tool tray. I really like it. I can
    quickly fold it up and hang it on the wall. I think it is the best
    if you want a good stand that is easily transported and stored and
    are not a bike shop or use for tandems (I have a Santanna). Just about
    every thing else I have is shop quality (Park Pro truing stand etc.).
    If space and transportability were not my considerations (and I had a
    few extra $$$$) I would buy the best (the Park). By the way don't buy
    the Performance front wheel stabilizer. The one I bought required
    expanding the part that clips on the top tube (would damage the paint
    on standard diameter top tubes). Park makes a much better one, its in
    the Performance catalog also (I think).

1833.4Buying a Blackburn even though Park is best.AYOV24::RGELVINWed Jan 30 1991 04:5115
    Space is a consideration and also the fact that a shop in London
    is doing the Blackburn at 39 pounds sterling ($76). The fact that the
    Blackburn folds for storing is a major consideration as my bikes
    although stored two high on stands take up a good part of my bike
    store/training room. I think I always new the Park was best. I own
    a few Park tools and they are better than my Campag tools. However
    the fact that the Blackburn is considered a good second and I don't
    own a tandem has made me decide to order the Blackburn. Thanks for
    all the advice.

    Regards Richard

    P.S anybody want to buy a Leda workkstand (only joking)
