Some time in the past year or so, _Bicycling_ magazine published an article that discussed several tours. One of these was in the New Glarus, WI area. My SO and I are interested in doing that one, but I can't locate the issue. Can anyone tell me in what issue the article appeared or send me a photocopy? Thanks...

A friend and I did a week this year up in Wisconsin and included this loop in our itinerary. Some of the most beautiful cycling I have encountered is to be had in Wisconsin. You will like this ride a lot. As luck would have we met the author of the article at lunch in Spring Green. (Make sure you hit the Spring Green Hotel for a lunch or dinner, great German home cooking at reasonable prices. The potato, dumpling soup is an incredibly good way to load the carbos. Ah, such fond memories, yet I digress.) Small hotels are plentiful and reasonable in the area. We plan to do it again next summer, but we will not camp. We plan to do day trips from a little north of New Glarus using Dodgeville as a base of operations. New Glarus is an easy loop from Dodgeville. You can ride for weeks up there and never do the same loop twice. Make sure you write the state Chamber of Commerce. They have some excellent biking materials. I made a similar request to yours back in the summer and got some good information. Seems to me the note was back in the 1600 range. I'll try to find it for you. If you want to give me a call at DTN 443-3221 I'd be glad to provide you as much additional information as you want regarding our experience.

I grew up in Central Wisconsin (pre biking days) and although the New Glarus area is quite beautiful I'd have to vote for Northern Wisconsin as a better vacation spot. The area is absolutely amazing in it's beauty. Take Vermont and add a couple of thousand lakes and you get Northern Wisconsin. It is a very popular area for people from Milwaukee/Chicago to go on vacation. Cottage rentals are easy to find. I have a soft spot for the area around Rhinelander and Antigo.

You might be interested in reading 1717 for additional information on Wisconsin routes other than the one described in the Bicycling article. Whatever you decide, good luck. Let us hear about your trip. |
