1806.1 | my vote for the Mongoose | DOGONE::WOODBURY | | Wed Dec 19 1990 13:58 | 11 |
| I can't speak for the Bianchi, but the Mongoose PRO is a great ride.
I have 5 friends who have either the Comp, PRO or Team and they all
are really happy with them. They also hold up well to the off-road
hammering (although they still can't keep up with my Wicked!).
Also, You might want to consider the Exeter Bike Shop. Great place,
the owner (John Gromack) was in the Olympics in '68 and is still
very dedicated. And they carry Mongoose so you can compare... (He
also carries Fat City '8^) ).

For what should be about $200.00 difference don't screw around.
Get the Mongoose team Magenta in color and Deore XT in components.
It also has some other quality points worth looking into.

Re:.2
Well the insurance company for the other party being Allstate gave
me a lot of hassle at first and threw all kinds of cut outs at me
re: how bicycles are considered a vehicle and should obay the law
blah blah, but the thing was that I never did any wrong .
Anyhow their first offer was $1500.00 and after one rejection
they offered $4500.00 this includes a third for the lawyers.
My other choices were to wait between 18 months to two years to take
them to court or settle, I took the later.
As for Roger's recommendation, Rog. I wish I had seen your note before
my purchase. I went up to the bike shop, they had the pro, comp and
sport assembeled and the team still in the box.
For 91 the IBOCs have over size fork and headsets. They come with the
new Araya CV-7 rims and the comp has the Deore LX instead of the Exage
500.
Well behind the shop there is a park with some hills and a half mile
down the road there is a sand pit which made it pretty good to test
ride these bikes.
I used to have the Deore XT (with Thumb shifters) on the bike that got
totaled. So I am not sure how much of a sacrifice I made but the
difference as far as shifting between the DX and LX was so minimal that
I could not realy tell, other than that they road about the same. I
loved both. But since I was saving $75.00 on the Comp which would allow
for a new helmet, plus I like the color on the Comp better I went for
the Comp. Did I make a mistake Rog.?
I hope I get to meet up with some of you and get to do some trails and
stuff. Thanks for the tips.

Number one, you're going to love the bike. Number two you're
going to wish for this and that. Six months from now you tell me
if you made a mistake. My advice is that it's not too late to return it
if you've got the get to purchase the team. Otherwise all the IBOC
frames look solid. What kind of tires did you get? The IBOCS take
a fat one because they are wishbone.
The people I ride with always welcome others. We look for the
'right' terrain. I want to go to Rutland State Park sometime.
Next year I'm going to put a major ride together up in Crawford
Notch on a trail called the Davis Path. It sounds good. Right now
I'm gathering info on it and I'll scout it out first. It may end up
an overnight. Sometime around 1900 this guy Davis had a riding
outfit in the White Mtns. and he built this bridal path with oxen
that is supposed to be graded and have some heavy duty stone work.
He went out of business when the carriages started to carry people
up thru there and the trail grew in till about ten years ago the
AMC went in with an old woodsman pointing the way and opened it up
again.

1806.6 | could still change to the PRO but should I? | SALEM::SHAW | Vertical Obsession... | Fri Dec 21 1990 13:29 | 22 |

Roger, Keep me in mind if you guys go on any mtb rides, especially
the one day trips. I know I like to spend all my time skiing but
the way its been (current conditions) I might prefer some biking
instead. I can still get the PRO for an extra $70.00 There were really
two reasons why I got inclined to get the Comp, first was the front
delairure going from high to low keep missing the second gear. Jumped
from high to all the way low, and then the chain poped. I guess nothing
that a little fine tunning wouldn't cure. But the Comp had no problems
at my test ride. Plus I just prefer the white and black frame to the
all black.(although some might think its a stupid reason for choosing
a bike.) The only differnce was really the DX and LX and I just could
not feel any quickness difference. Now the team is another story, it
seems like it has a different head/seat angel. All in all I don't think
there is much difference between the pro and comp. there was last year
the comp last year had the Exage components.
The tires are the Mongoose all terrain 1.95 which I like because they
are faster. I had a pair of 2.15 on my old bike, and it just added a
lot of weight to the bike and also slowed it down some.
Well I'll either see you on the slopes or some moutain trail somewhere!

1806.7 | the PRO was the choice.. | SALEM::SHAW | Vertical Obsession... | Wed Dec 26 1990 07:58 | 8 |

Well, this past weekend I got to take out both the comp and pro for
a long ride on some hills. Did some descent climbing and road through
mud, water etc. This time I did notice a difference between the two
bikes, I ended up bringing home the PRO.
