1756.0. "N.E. FALL RIDIN' 1990?" by WMOIS::C_GIROUARD () Fri Oct 05 1990 21:18
A little humor is order now. After all, fall riding in the New England
area is (can be) hilarious...
How 'bout:
ACORNS AND HORSE CHESNUTS
I swear that those trees are mean. Getting hit in the
the helmet, face, knees, chest, etc... Those acorns
are made of super ball material. Bounce??? You bet!
Naturally, mother nature has equipped them with these
sharp points. And they always hit ya just right.
Riding on them (over them) is real treat too....
LEAVES (the crunching noise does nothing for me)
It's really neat when you get home and have to pick
the remnants out of your freewheel. Colder weather?
Ever have 'em foul your derailleur??? After they
freeze in there when they're a little damp???
Fun stuff!
Ahhh, the camo factor. I wonder what's (the hell)
underneath those suckers. We always find out, don't
we.
Wet leaves? Yeowwwwwww... Pretty to look at, but they
really should stay on the trees.
WIND
Turns a nice ride into a workout (or a workout into
a nice ride). I don't know about about your area, but
we run 20-35mph winds all fall in my neck of the woods.
I'd rather climb all day than buck the winds. Let's not
forget the sandblast factor. Gimme bugs vs. grit between
my teeth.
ANXIETY
Winter's a' comin'. Oh no... relegated to the cellar
and the wind trainer... can only take so much of
Oprah Winfrey while gasping for air. Besides, I don't
care if Mongolian, one armed horse traders have difficulty
breeding in March on odd calender years anyway....
Hey Tom, $40 bucks for a jersey that's been worn (and
washed twice) twice?? I've seen you sweat :-).......
Chip (who hates not being outside for any activity)

1756.1 | Your riding the wrong bike. | WMOIS::N_FLYE | | Mon Oct 08 1990 21:22 | 24 |

Funny thing. All that was mentioned in .1 made for one great weekend
of mountain biking. Never saw one single #$&%*@! leaf peeper. In fact
we only saw about 4 hikers and 2 other mountain bikers. Three straight
days of MTB heaven. Perfect weather.
The laughs of the weekend was performed by yours truly. Being first
in line on a single track is like being a guinea pig. I saw a large
mud puddle in the middle of the trail and decided that it could not be
too deep. I started into it at a fair rate of speed and suddenly my
whole front wheel and headset along with half the stem disappear into
the muck. I was lucky enough to simply step over the handlebars onto
hard ground. Later on I was not as lucky. During a shallow river
crossing my front tire hit an unseen rock and I am doing a track stand
in the middle of the river. While trying to negotiate my way around
the rock (still on the bike) I fall in. Can't wait until next weekend.
I love road bike riding but at times it can be too serious.
Constantly looking out for cars and road obstacles can become tedious.
On an MTB the fun is looking for obstacles to ride over. On MTB rides
I seem to laugh more and enjoy my friends more. Especially this past
weekend. So here's to a shower of leaves and a landslide of acorns but
may they fall in the woods only for Chip's sake.

Sounds like my weekend on MTB. My buddy did exactly the same thing
in a mud puddle, for a minute I thought it was him and had to check the
name. We had a blast including crunching up acorns. We ripped it up
we were so phsyched that we kept on going to the top of Belknap Mtn.
even though it was impossible to ride, just carried the bikes. The
downhill was sick. At one time 30 mph on single track. We did 17 miles
and the next day I felt like I had run the Boston marathon.

1756.3 | So much for nice days... | IAMOK::FRERE | Ellas Danzan Solas | Tue Oct 09 1990 12:38 | 16 |
| Rode the Dixville Notch Loop yesterday (106 miles). Told my boss that
if the weather was nice, I'd be taking the day off. Of course the
weather was nice... here.
In Northern N.H., the morning was nice (no wind, overcast and not too
cold). Decided to wear a wool short-sleeve jersey. Rode the 1st 58
miles and it was gorgeous; not too hilly and very scenic. I was so
impressed that I call my friend (who was working) to say how great the
ride was going. Had lunch in Errol - didn't realize what a 45 minute
break can do to the weather.
I Walked out to face a strong headwind to Dixville notch. Of course
when I got to the notch (a steap ~1.5 mile climb), the heavens opened
up with rain and the temperature nose-dived. The last 30 miles was spent
riding in a cold drizzle. So much for a nice day...

1756.5 | So what's in a decimal point? | IAMOK::FRERE | Ellas Danzan Solas | Fri Oct 12 1990 10:59 | 8 |
| Actually, it was fun until my glasses got blurry due to the rain and I
mis-read the sign at Dixville Notch:
Steep Climb next 1.5 miles
I missed the decimal point and considered suicide...
