1674.1 | ZKO 9.5 mile route
| CSSE32::SMITH | Reality, just a visible imagination? | Tue Jul 31 1990 10:20 | 17 |
| I've been riding this route at lunch. It's about 9.5 miles...
West on Spit Brook road (which becomes East Dunstable which becomes Lamb Road
which becomes Middle Dunstable which becomes Ridge Road). The trick here is
to just follow the road and not make any turns. This (these) roads provide
some very fast downhill. Ridge Road "T's" into Main Dunstable (111A). Hang a
right on 111A and follow it until the next right which will be Conant Road.
Follow Conant road until you hit Harris Road (third right I believe). Harris
Road takes you to the RT3 end of East Dunstable. Take a right on East Dunstable
and follow this back to Spit Brook Road.
It's a nice ride. SEEMS like mostly downhill.
Cheers,
...Ed

1674.3 | GSW rides from the Tara | EQUINE::DANI | | Tue Aug 07 1990 18:36 | 15 |
|
Yes there are ride from the Tara on Tues & Thurs. At the moment there is very
low attendance due to a another ride that is held he same mornings. But
the few of us still go out.
You can give me a call about the Thursday ride to be sure we're going (like
the weather or work can get in the way) DTN 381-2583. Joe Neumister(sp?)
does the Tues ride. I'm not sure of his number.
Both rides leave the Tara at 11:30 (parking lot between Spit Brook and the
pond.
Welcome to join us!

does lunchtime rides from ZKO? I'm looking for routes

Hi John,
The Granite State Wheelmen have rides that leave from down by the Tara.
Joe Neumeister (VMSBCK::) and I (SUPER::DANI) lead them.
For the remainder of April they are Tues & Thurs , departure at 11:30
For May & June Wednesdays only 11:30 departure.
We do 20-30 miles. Sometimes there are queue sheets, sometimes not.
Pace is fast-touring.
If you want to join us it wise to contact Joe or me prior to showing
up. Work *can* occaisionally take priority. ;-)

1674.6 | Rides from ZKO at Lunch tomorrow, 6/26/96? | PCBUOA::aki1005.ako.dec.com::rehberg | | Wed Jun 26 1996 14:46 | 12 |
| I will be visiting in ZKO tomorrow, Thursday, and would like to go for a
lunch time ride. I printed out the Q sheet from .2
Is there a locker room? Where?
Do others go out? Would it make sense to try to join up?
Are the rides mentioned in .3 & .5 still being run?
Thanks,
Rick Rehberg

>Is there a locker room? Where?
There are two that I know of.
o In building 3, first floor, as part of the Wellness center there are
large locker rooms.
o In building 2, first floor (which is only a half floor, on the North
side, due to high sloping ground on the South), there are small locker
rooms incorporated into the bathrooms on the West end of the floor,
near the so-called jogger's entrance door (for which you need a
facility key card).

| I sent the following mail around to folks I know cycle out of ZKO at lunch.
Anyone is invited to participate, so I figure posting it here will give even
more coverage.
Tim
I think all of you know me. You are receiving this mail because 1. You
ride a bike and 2. You work at ZKO. To my knowledge, there are
essentially two core groups that go riding at lunch-time. The group I
rode with last year (Tim, Gary, Larry, Ron, Buddy, Dave, Jim) plus some
guest appearances (Todd, Steve, Bill) and the folks from VMS land (Mark,
Lenny, et. al.) Talking to Lenny in the locker room yesterday, I
thought maybe we ought to have one big list. Details are still TBD, but
I would imagine it would work much like "Everyone meet at 11:30 in lot G
and when we're all there, we eithe all go together, or subdivide based
on what everyone wants to do." I've found that one large group makes it
hard to get exactly the pace you want, although it would be neat to have
a 12-15 person paceline leave ZKO.
Anyway, if you'd like to be in on this, send me a reply, including your
full name, which building you work in and some idea of what kind of
riding you can/want to do at lunch, i.e. "A hard day for me is 30 miles
at 23 mph and an easy day is 20 miles at 18 mph" (which is my lunch-time
range, during the summer.) I have no plans to dissolve the existing
lunch-time riders list, but I would be happy to maintain either two
lists or one big one. If you've been getting the zko-riders regular
mail from me last year, then I already know who you are and how you
ride, so no reply is necessary.
Below is the text I've sent out in the past to people wishing to ride
with us. It is how things worked last season, and may or may not be
indicative of this year.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the scoop:
We have a mailing list announcing the ride every day. The list is
hosted on my workstation and is available as "[email protected]", or
I suspect that savvy::zko-riders or savvy::"zko-riders" might work. Everyone on
it so far is a UNIX person. Let me know if you'd like your name added to it.
We could benefit from another strong rider such as yourself. Anyway, this is
the the protocol:
1. Someone, usually me or Larry Cohen, sends out "the invitation"
somewhere between 9 and 10am.
2. The invitation always includes a time, which defaults (if you forget,
but we try to be specific) to 11:30. The time is the time at which we leave
the property. I.e., you should have your wheels on, tires inflated, chain
lubed, etc. at the right time. We all take a different amount of time to get
ready. We use to have a "meet in the locker room at 11:30" rule, but that
wasted time.
3. Reply TO THE LIST, not just the sender, so everyone has a clue who to
look for and/or wait for. I'm in ZK2, so I use the local locker room. Everyone
else is in ZK3 so they tend to meet in the locker room and go out to the lot as
a group.
4. The meeting place by default is in the upper lot there in ZK3. We
tend to use the main street as the approach so we don't miss each other.
5. We GENERALLY leave at 11:30, although if any of us have 1:00
meetings, we can leave by 11:10-11:15 most days.
6. The shortest loop is 20.5 miles and the longest is 28.5 miles. They
are all rolling hills. They all either go down East Dunstable, across 113 and
into Groton, or they go over the top of the hill, Ridge Road to 111a to 111
to Depot Rd in Hollis. Some go out and back the same way with a loop in the
middle, and some go out one of those two ways and come back the other.
7. So as to satisfy all the members of the group, we try to stick to the
following schedule:
TTh: Hard riding. If you know the route, we *might not* wait if you get
spit out the back. This tends to be an interval or TTT type workout. Average
speeds tend to be low 20s.
MWF: Easy riding/spin/technique. On MWF, we always keep the group
together. We encourage small chainring use only, except on the down
hills. We work on our spin and on paceline technique. It is much more
important on these days to keep the pace even and hold a straight line then to
pull the pack at 30 mph. Average speeds tend to be anywhere from 18-21 mph,
usually 19-20.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Sept/Oct last year, I ran a few introductory rides on Wed to get new
folks together to learn new routes, and how to ride in a group. I would
consider doing this again in the early part of the season.
*PLEASE* forward this to anyone else in the building that might be
interested. Joe N -- If there is any overlap with GSW and the old Tara
rides, this might be handy to know about too.
There are also "learn to race" rides on Sat. AM starting in April down
in Bedford, run by my club, the Northeast Bicycle Club (I may or may not
be there) for serious riders who have an interest in racing. The Boston
Road Club Wells Ave Training Series starts March 9th for anyone
interested in that.
Ride hard or ride home alone,
Tim

1674.10 | ZKO2-1 Locker Room Closed for March & Part of April | RTL::DAHL | | Mon Mar 03 1997 09:05 | 10 |
| I was informed this morning, as I was attempting to use it, that the ZKO2-1
locker room is closed for the next six weeks (due to the foor's being
remodeled). The fellow said that mail had been sent out three times in the past
couple of weeks, but neither I, nor a few other people I've asked have heard
of this. In case you haven't either, perhaps knowing ahead of time can save
you some hassle.
I used the little locker room at the West end of ZKO1-1 instead (next to the
Aiken conference room).

| Wow, what a mess this is going to make. You can't fit more than 3 or
4 poeple in ZKO1 changing area. Since 2-1 is the changing room for the
wellness center, are they planning any alternative?

Here's the ZKO site shutdown note from Jim Dirico.

Subj: ZKO Site Shutdown - Phase II ZKO Mechanical Upgrade 1
From: NAME: Site Services <SITE@A1@SALES@PKO>
To: See Below (Distribution List Truncated)
From: James Dirico, Facilities Customer Service
Contracts are now in place for Phase II of the ZKO Mechanical upgrade, and
the retrofit of the entire office area in ZKO2-1currently occupied by Oracle.
Access to ZKO2-1 will be completely restricted from March 3 through May 9.
The preliminary work will start within the next few days. We anticipate some
minor disruption which may cause you to take a different route to your office,
we will be distributing notices as necessary on any disruptions; we will make
every effort to keep these to a minimum.
For those of you that work off hours and weekends you may experience some
noisy periods due to slab cutting and new wall construction.
We have identified two weekends, April 12-13 and May 2-3, that site access
will be completely restricted, except Saturday evening from 10:00 PM to
Sunday 5:00 AM and Sunday evening after midnight. Access to the site will
be closed off at the Digital sign on Tara Blvd.
We are looking for your cooporation to expedite this project, as there is a
very short time window to complete the work scheduled for these weekends. Any
disruption to the schedule may result in delayed access on Saturday and
Sunday evenings. We DO NOT anticipate power disruptions to the labs during
these two weekend site shutdowns.
We have also identified sections of parking lots in ZKO1 and ZKO2 that we
will be staging materials and trailers for this work, we will cordon off
these areas and ask for your complete cooperation in staying clear of these
areas. This project is scheduled to be complete in mid May.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation, please feel free to contact me
directly with questions or concerns.

Interesting that MKO residents got this. Has anyone from ZKO seen such a
notice?
I called the ZKO Faciliies Customer Service number 1-6500 to complain about the
lack of notice. Now that I see the memo posted here (and the scope of the
restrictions), I'm even more amazed that some of us haven't been informed.

really be able to ride at lunch. At least with Oracle folks gone, the lot
closure up here doesn't make a HUGE impact.
