1669.0. "MS Countryside/Oceanside BikeFest '90" by NETMAN::DRUEKE () Fri Jul 27 1990 10:01

  I picked up a brochure for the '90 MS Countryside/Oceanside
BikeFest yesterday at my health club. I've been riding a bike
for about 2+ months and thought the Oceanside 50 mi trip might
be a good way to finish out my first season. (I have a goal to
do a century before I'm 50, I'm 46 now so that would be next year
or later)

Couple of questions - has anyone ridden on one of these 'tours' before
that could tell me what to expect for terrain around Scituate/Cohasset
on Boston's south Shore? And second, how about some suggestions of
training routines? I currently using free weights around six mornings a week
and riding 10-25 mile on each of 2-3 days a week. Did 27 miles yesterday
and averaged @12 mph - tried pushing it it a bit and it didn't feel too
bad.

This is sponsored or whatever by MS - Multiple Sclerosis - so I'll have
to find some sponsors - Any offers?

Also, anyone else planning for this trek?

Ray.

1669.1The ride was yesterdayNETMAN::DRUEKEMon Sep 24 1990 14:1529
and thanks for the tips -- I actually did get some good ideas from this
conference.

The terrain was basically flat with the exception of one hill early on
and several long inclines after the 40 mile mark. Supposedly about 1600
riders participated for the day, seemed like most were in the 50 mi ride.
The DJ said that about $165 thou was raised for MS which was good to
hear. The ride was very well organized and marked but then it was my first
so who am I to judge....

The first 30 miles were easy and senic, 30-40 got interesting and 40-53.9
were a bitch, at least for me. Hit some hills and I was just plain getting
pooped. I'm surprised that I'm not very stiff today, maybe the training
helped. Actually the first 2-3 miles were most difficult for me - I've never
been in a pack and the start was a PACK and a half! Probably around 500-700
and nobody seemed to want to move. Went about 2 blocks and one poor guy
already had a flat - I thought 'Gee, this is gonna be great' A little
later the road ended and we all walked for about 1/3 mile just behind the
beach to the next road.

Didn't see or recognize any other Digits, but then how could I, we don't
all have our Jerseys! ;) <- in CAPS if I could figure out how!

All in all - a fun day and I'd do it again, maybe even a century.

Ray.
