| The ride you have planned is quite nice (I've done it a couple of times myself),
you may be underestimating the hills on Rt 202 though. If you don't mind a few
extra miles, then I'd advise you to take Administrations Rd off of Rt 9 in
Belchertown. This takes you right by the dam; if you are into views, and don't
mind another hill, then going up Quabbin "Mountain" will get you some great
ones.
I'd offer to join you, but I've got a century to do the following day.

Sounds good. I'd like to make it a C ride so I'll start at my house in
Worcester. Anyone else want to join me? Besides I don't know where Petersham
common is, I just stick to Rt122.

| Tom,
Petersham Common is a short distance off of 122, and there is a general
store there that you can get food and gatorade at.

| Tom,
Its real easy to get to the commons from rt122. As you reach the "TOP"
of the hill that started way back in Barre, you'll come to the
intersection of rt32 and rt122, its right at the gas station, bear
right onto rt32 and the common is about 3/4 of a mile up the road.
Like .3 said there is a small store that may provide you with the
required sugar boost...tho I don't know if they carry JOLT!?!??
Have a nice ride and I hope to see you there

| I guess I couldn't wait...
I ended up doing the Century yesterday. Rt122 -> 202 ->9 ->32 ->122.
I didn't plan on doing it so there was no prep involved, such as carb'n up the
night before and getting a good breakfast in. Plus I started at 11:30, so it
was a sweaty ride. Took 6:10 over all and 5:35 riding time. No record but
that's not what I was looking for anyway. I can say that a good pasta meal the
night before makes a big difference. Good thing I had some POWER bars, yum yum.
The strong head wind on the way back had me wishing for a set of clip-ons.

1667.6 | Try it in reverse! | MCIS2::NORTON | Kathy Norton | Tue Aug 14 1990 17:19 | 13 |
| Last Sunday I did this ride, but did it in reverse. Judging from the
faces of the people heading south on 202, it's much easier to reverse
the route so you're heading north on 202. We had plenty of uphills,
but they didn't seem as intense as the hills we were coming down.
Also, by doing it in reverse, you end up going south on 32A. I've done
it both ways, and it seems to me that heading south is easier than
heading north.
Either way, it's quite a ride! We rode all through the Quabbin, and it
was well worth the effort. The views are wonderful!
Just my opinion,
Kathy

| Kathy,
Thats a great idea...I've often wondered which way is more
pleasurable.. I'll offer your suggestion to my friend the organizer.
Has anyone else done this route? What do think is the better direction
to take, from an enjoyment stand point??

1667.8 | Question on preparation for the Hills around Quabbin | PCBUOA::aki1005.ako.dec.com::rehberg | | Fri Jun 07 1996 09:44 | 17 |
| I see from this note that the ride around Quabbin is quite hilly. I am
thinking of doing the 7 Hills Century ride next weekend but I am not sure I
am prepared. How much preparation is needed for the hills on this C?
Last year I did the metric on this ride. In August I did 110 mile ride
from Northoro to Falmouth. This year I have been riding 80-100 miles per
week for the last few weeks. I have about 600 total for the year so far.
(I also run 15-20 mi/week). I will go on a 60-70 mile ride this weekend
which will include Mt Wachusetts.
Should I go for the C or stick with the metric?
Thanks for advice.

1667.9 | but dont try to hammer it... | EDSCLU::NICHOLS | | Fri Jun 07 1996 16:32 | 17 |
| WARNING: This is pure opinion
15-20 miles on foot, coupled with 80-100 miles on road sounds like 3-4 days
of each activity. That adds to almost every day of the week you are doing
+-1 hour of 'strenuous' activity. From that I would gather you have a decent
general fitness level. Yes, the ride around Quabbin is hilly, but there is
nothing (at least that I can remember) which quallifies as torturous. I
suspect that you will be ok. If you can complete you Mt Wachusett ride this
weekend, you should be golden. (IMHO, the Wachusett RR is more difficult
than the Quabbin RR, and Wachusett is ~15 miles shorter.)
Go for the full 100 miles.
BTW, what day is the ride, the New England Regional Champ RR (100k around
the Quabbin) is 9-Jun.
