1642.0. "MARLBORO STRATUS RACE" by WMOIS::C_GIROUARD () Tue Jul 17 1990 08:35

     A little discussion on the Marlboro Stratus Centennial Race this
    past Sunday:

     The turnout was fairly substantial. I would guess there were at least
    250-300 riders including all categories. It was very hot and humid,
    brutal! The roads were in good shape (short 20 miler) and it was mixed
    well with some hills although I thought it should have been a little
    more demanding.

     My age group (30-39) stayed together (about 40-50 in the pack) for
    about 16-17 of the twenty miles. It finally broke up a little bit
    as we went through the industrial park area (where the DEC bldgs.
    are). We probably ended up with about 20-25 in the lead pack after
    that. It was fairly fast too. I had 25mph on the computer and a finish
    of approx. 47.52... fastest I've been in this year. There were a couple
    of crashes... the people were taken away in ambulances.

     The pack itself was a little "squirrely". I can't say much because I
    almost took out Paul Goodwin (my apologies again). The whole ride was
    noisy with people constantly yelling at each other and some of the
    juniors that were trying to mix in that we caught. At about the 17 mile
    mark two people (I think Mark Reid was one of them) took off, then a
    3rd guy caught them, then I took off and caught them. The four of us
    stayed together for about 1/4 mile (we were only out in front by maybe
    100yds.-200yds.) and were swallowed up by the pack again. I know I was
    spent when I got back in the pack.

     There were a lot of yellow line violations. I hate that... especially
    at th beginning of the race (where most of them took place). I don't
    know where these guys thought they were going. Sheeeshhhh....

     Now for my editorial... I thought the race finish was set up for a
    Kamakazi effort. We screamed down into Marlboro center (down the hill).
    Verrrrrry dangerous and I don't know why they'd plan that. The road
    was a little rough, it narrowed near the bottom and had a slight
    turn close to the middle. I don't mind saying I was a little nervous.
    Then the shutes were less than a 100yds, from the finish line. We were
    doing over 40mph over the line. One other thing... It never ceases to
    amaze me when you're asked to hold your position and you get these
    yay-hoos who will just go by you after on there bikes to pick up two
    or three positions. Unless you're finishing 1-2 or 3, what's the
    thrill. What's the thrill about saying "Boy, I came in 5th/6th...
    really close" when they really came in 10th/12th. Man what a sense
    of accomplishment. I mean passing someone AFTER the race is over.
    I thought they could've pushe the finish line down Main St. by about
    a 100-200yds. and had a great sprint finish.

     Oh well, it was fun for the most part. I just enjoy being there and
    participating. Mt. Washington here I come....

1642.1Why doesn't dec sponsor events like this?MEMORY::GOODWINJust say NO to Day GloTue Jul 17 1990 11:1847
	The turnout was a little over 340 people. It was broken up into
	about 5 groups. The group that Chip G. and I were in had 102
	finishers and there were a few who had crashed.

	The pack made me nervous for the first few miles. aA lot of
	people overlapping wheels and the pack kept buldging forcing the
	outside riders over the yellow. There were a few attacks by riders
	outside the yellow line but Mark Reid, who was a marshall, was
	doing his best to keep the pack contained.

	At one point I thought I was going to die when some maniac on a
	red Cannondale with a C-record group (the type of cyclist who
	gets a nice bike and then thinks he's Greg Lemond :-) ) almost crashed
	into me. Actually, unless I missed something, Chip didn't come that
	close to me. Mark Reid, on the other hand, did.

	The only hill of any consequence was Rt. 30. I wanted to be with the
	lead pack in the climb and in the front on the descent. This was
	because at the bottom of the hill the route to a sharp right onto
	Johnson Rd. in Southboro and I did not want to be with a pack at
	~40 mph making that turn. In addition to marshalling the race
	Mark R. was also trying to force the pace. Which he has been known
	to do on hills.

	The course went then took Cedar Hill Rd. past MOO then down Hayes
	Memorial to Nickerson Rd. One of the riders near the front went down
	on Nickerson where it starts to level out. At this point the lead pack
	was down to about 25 riders. We turned onto Ames and then up forest
	and past MRO1. While climbing Ames I broke a couple spokes and since
	I only had 22 left and I could see that they were buldging I figured
	I would stay out of the middle of the pack.

	The last half mile was down hill into a right curve and 100 yds to the
	finish. Things were complicated for the 30-39 group by an ambulance
	on the right side of the road because of a crash involving 2 riders
	from the 20-29 group.

	I ended up 22nd and according to my Cateye the course was 25.02 and
	we did it in a little over 46 minutes. Not a bad race for Bill Fiske's
	first bike race. The finish should have been moved further down Main
	street for a longer sprint and give the riders more time to slow down
	before forcing them through chutes to record finishing places.

1642.2GREGG REINCARNATED????WMOIS::C_GIROUARDTue Jul 17 1990 11:4010
     Wait a minute... You mean I'm NOT Gregg LeMond and the guy in
    France ISN'T an imposter????? Sheesh, I hate going through changing
    your drivers license, changing memo headings, credit cards, etc...

     Gee Paul, I didn't think there were that many in our group. They
    could have easily split it 30-34 & 35-39. We always seem to have the
    largest population. I didn't see the guy go down in our group...
    Hmmmm, I thought it was just a bump in the road :-)...

       Gregg,  errr, I mean Chip
1642.3Good race - Bad finishAKOV13::THOMPSONWed Jul 18 1990 11:0913
     The Marlboro Stratus Centennial Race was only my second race, My first
    was the TDL. My age group is (40-49). Our group broke up on the first
    turn onto RT85. About 20 of us where in the first pack. We worked well
    together for the first 10 miles. When we turned on to RT30 (the only
    long hill) our AV/MPH was 27 -by my cat. About 5 of us where about 200
    yds. of the lead group and we stayed that way till we hit the hill at
    Ames ST. (MR0). My group finished about 1 to 2 mins. after the first
    group. My avg/speed was 24.2 . There was a bad BUMP just before the
    finish and I almost lost it there. All in all it was fun. Is this going
    to be a yearly thing? Are there any more local races around?

1642.4CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION...WMOIS::C_GIROUARDThu Jul 19 1990 09:0213
     There's a two man TT in Newport on the 28th/broken by age groups

     There's a road race in Manchester on the 4th or 5th (same deal
    with ages/citizens)

     There will be one in Hollis, N.H. in Sept./Oct. that's pretty good.
    It's a 25 mile circuit (2 12.5 mile loops)

     Marlboro had one last year (I believe it was a circuit last year).
    This one was part of their centennial celebration. It looked like
    a college party had taken place downtown.

1642.5TWO OTHER RACES DELNI::MARCINKUSThu Jul 19 1990 09:297
    Two other races to consider:

    8/5 - The Stowe, Vermont road race. A somewhat famous 47 mile road
          race which travels over several major climbs such as "the notch".

    8/12 - The Nashua, New Hampshire Criterium. This is the 3rd year for
    	   this flat, relatively safe, and fast crit.
1642.6Thanks AKOV13::THOMPSONThu Jul 19 1990 10:287
    THANKS!!

     I was thinking of doing Manchester - It's just a long ride from North
    Attleboro where I live. The Hollis and Stowe races spark of adventure.

    Thanks

1642.7SANDS::CRITZWho'll win the TdF in 1990?Thu Jul 19 1990 10:5319
    	I was at the races last year put on by the Nashua Velo
    	Club. Because it rained on and off, the last turn before
    	the finish line was pretty tricky. It's a sharp, narrow
    	right hander than also goes down. Add to this the fact
    	that the left edge of the road you're turning onto has
    	a huge tree and a few major boulders on it, and you
    	have some reason for concern.

    	On the last turn of the last lap in the women's race, one
    	rider went down. A couple of others ended up heading for
    	the tree/boulders/grass. One woman hit the tree head on.
    	When Ron came up, I suggested that, if they used the same
    	course next year, they put up a coupla mattresses in front
    	of the tree. He seemed to think that was better than what
    	they had then, which was nothing.

    	The ambulance made a few runs that day.
