There are some bike/hiking trails in the White Mountains. One that we've been
planning on trying is at the Covered Bridge Campgrounds on The Kangamagus
highway. I'm sure if you stopped in or called the rangers station or called
the tourist info people you could get more info about offroad biking in the
White Mountains National Forest.

| North on 13 out of Townsend, Ma is the Townsend forest. Real nice
moderate trails including some singletrack up/down and a killer gravel
road. You can easily spend a day in here exploring the trails.

| Now that sounds great! I'm taking note of the previou note too
mentioning the White Mountains, but that's just a little further
than we wanted.
Any input on Lexington? or Carlisle?
Also, someone mentioned to me something about an area up behind
Nashua (NH) High School? Does anybody know if this is just a
park, or is it open to bikes? They were pretty vague.

I ride some trails in Upton MA. They start across the street
from Blackstone valley High school and go on for miles. They are
mostly single track and some parts are very challenging (I've got
the bruises to proove it!). I also ride power lines to an abandoned
railroad trestle in milbury and the Upton state forest is my next
target. All these areas are relativly free from
hikers/horses/pedestrians/dirt bikes and other distractions.

| Re .3 :
The area behind Nashua HS is Mine Falls Park. It does have several
paths, paved and unpaved, with distances like 3-5 mi.
The paths are (generally) narrow and frequented by numerous runners
and other fitness/nature walkers and riders. You would probably have
more fun in a less civilized area ...

1585.6 | Ridge Road Railroad Bed | DICKNS::MACDONALD | VAXELN - Realtime Software Pubs | Mon Jul 09 1990 14:32 | 8 |
| In Nashua, off Ridge Road, a couple hundred feet before the narrow
bridge over Salmon Brook, there is an abandoned railroad bed (no
tracks, no ties). I wonder if anyone has ventured down there. I checked
an old map, and it appears to extend for MANY miles through Dunstable
and beyond.

I know it's been a while since the previous reply was
entered, but
I was just down on that trail off of Ridge Road. It
was really up and down little bumps in the trail, but
alot of fun. Nice and peaceful, we went down a couple
of miles and turned around because of time, but I
want to check it out again.
It was great riding for hybrid bikes like we have.
I didn't realize it was an abandoned railroad bed.

| I saw a brief blurb about that trail in the Telegraph. Apparently, it
was once the Nashua-Acton-Boston railroad. I understand it went under
a few decades ago. In theory you should be able to pedal right into
Acton along that railbed.
