Steve,
The 6am ride sounds like fun. I will be on Martha's Vineyard that
weekend but will be staying at Webb's campground with the Franklin
Hampshire Freewheelers. They plan to ride to the nearest beach and
commence the burning process. This is not my idea of bicycling. If
there won't be any problems with me tagging along I would like to join.

Norm,
I don't think anyone will have a problem with that. The
only question is whether or not we'll have any "animals"
along that are willing to get up at 6:00 AM. 8^) I might
be persuaded to get up that early if I stay out of the bar
the night before.
More info:
We're staying at the Wesley Hotel, supposedly the
oldest hotel on the island (?), overlooking the harbor in
Oak Bluffs.
RE: .1
Thanks for the info. They tell me that the ferry from
Woods Hole lands in Vineyard Haven, about 2.5 miles from the
hotel, while the Falmouth ferry lands about 100 yards down
the road.

| As of last year, there were ferries from Woods Hole to both Oak
Bluffs and Vineyard Haven. I haven't looked at this year's
schedule yet, but I don't know of any reason for them to have
cancelled service to Oak Bluffs.
Do go to Edgartown, it's the nicest town on the island. Gay head
is a required view. I've never been fond of Oak Bluffs.

| The passanger (no cars) ferry from Falmouth, the Ocean Queen, is
my preferred choice for waterborne transport to MV. (I dream of flying
there some day...) It's a smaller, nicer alternate [IMO]. There's lots
of space (a big bike rack) for bikes. - Chris

RE: .2
We looked for on Saturday morning, Norm. 8^)
The two 16 year old kids in the group persuaded me to roll
out of bed at 6:00 and do a few miles. One of them towed me
around for most of the 17 miles and still managed to outlast
me in the final sprint back to the hotel. 8^( Next year
I'm going to get up a little early and work on his brakes
before we ride! 8^)

1529.7 | Train on a touring bike | WMOIS::N_FLYE | | Wed May 30 1990 22:23 | 23 |

Steve,
Sorry I didn't go riding with you. I had set my watch for 5:30
so I could get to the hotel in time for the ride. My mind and legs
decided to take the morning off. I had done the Mt. Mitchell century
the weekend before and as soon as I got back I loaded up the the
touring bike and headed out with a friend for Martha's Vineyard.
While we were in western Mass. we had fun looking at all the scenery.
But then all of a sudden we hit Worcester and from then on all we saw
were buildings. I am a country boy and was really missing the open
fields and woods. So to take our minds off this unpleasant part of the
trip we started to do town line sprints. The first person to cross a
town line earned a point. Must have been really funny to see two fully
loaded bikes weighing about 80 pounds each sprinting for the line. I
wish I could get a lead out from a touring bike at a real race. Felt
like drafting a trailer truck.
So by Saturday morning I decided to sleep in. I was on the bike by
9:00 though. Maybe next year.

| Norm,
Talking about drafting a trailer truck...
Latest issue of VeloNews has a picture of Michael Secrest
drafting a trailer truck during his 24-hour record ride.
Rear of the trailer had a plexiglas fairing.

I know what you mean about the legs...
I let the youngsters go by themselves on Sunday morn.
(I mostly just didn't want to get embarrassed again)
