| I saw something on TV, maybe NOVA or some such, where a guy drafted behind a
race car with a giant rear air dam. I think it was out in the Nevada salt flats.
As I recall, he hit over 140 mph. Now that's a record!

Secrist is currently averaging a little over 45 mph. That puts him
just over 1000 miles in 24 hours.
He's using a 92x12 gearing and plans to stay on the bike the entire 24
hours.

| The guy on the salt flats was John Howard. He got a flat the first
time and they thought it might have been because the valve open under
centrifugal force.

***** 1216 miles *****
Secrist set a new 24hr paced distance record of 1216 miles.
That's an average of 50.67 mph.

| I happened to see a brief clip on the TV about the record breaking. Mike was
pacing an 18 wheeler for most of it. It was reported that he NEVER got off the
bike! Must have felt great when it came time to get off. I wouldn't have wanted
to be the truck driver never mind trying something like that. Also his chain
ring was big. Now what size chain ring do you suppose he needed to do 50+ mph?
Tom
BTW the program that showed the clip was a *MOTOR*sports racing show.

| .4 says that he was using 92 x 12 gearing - the chainwheel must have
been just about touching the ground... It's an amazing record, but it's
hard to judge it as an athletic feat. Is the distance amazing, or the
fact that he could keep going for 24 hours?
Can anyone give some background on Michael Secrest?

1515.11 | Background on Secrest | BCSE::KLASMAN | Boston-Montreal-Boston 1990 | Tue May 01 1990 08:04 | 7 |
| Mike Secrest is one of the most tenacious RAAM competitors, having entered RAAM
4 or 5 time before he won it. He usually led the race for most of the way (or
at least was one of the leaders) before some unfortunate occurrence befell him.
He is known for being almost maniacal in his approach to RAAM and for being able
to stay on the bike for VERY long periods of time. It doesn't surprise me in
the least that he set this record.
