I am a new proud owner of a mountain bike or possibly better off-road bike (Kettler [German brand], alu frame, 18 gears). My question is about the "correct" or recommended hight of the handle bar in relation to the seat. I am fairly tall (186cm/6ft.1). The rule for racing bikes - seat 1.5 inch higher than top of handle bar - seems unsuitable for a mountain bike. Any suggestions are welcome. Reinhard

The most typical recommendation I've seen is to have the seat height 2 inches higher than the handlebars, give or take a bit based on personal preference, whether you need a lower torso for racing, etc. etc. This guideline agrees with what Mountain Bike Action magazine recommended in an article on set-up. (MBA seems to be THE magazine for the hard-core off-roaders here in the States.) Have fun, Tom |
