1482.0. "New Allen-Key-Adjustable Headset?" by MEO78B::SHERRATT () Wed Apr 04 1990 08:36

Has anyone seen, touched, used or had any experience with a new headset
(Mavic, I think) which appears to be adjustable with an Allen key? It
looks like a great idea. Are any problems known? It seems to me that
apart from the obvious benefit of making it much easier to get the
setting right than fiddling around with headset spanners, 1 expensive
headset plus Allen key is probably cheaper than 1 average headset plus
    spanners.

AND IF IT'S EASY TO ADJUST:

My roommate bought a Mavic headset last year and is quite happy. I don't
think he's had to adjust it since the initial setup.

I just had a Mavic headset installed on my bike. It's very nice and
I'm completly happy with it. It uses a special spanner, not an
    allen for adjustments though.

Just installed the off road version on my new Wicked Fat Chance. The
thing I liked was that I didn't need to use the big 32mm wrenches.
I tightened down the bottom ring by hand and then did the same with the
top one. The top ring is tightened in place with an allen wrench.
So far so good. What's really great is if I am in the middle of the
woods and it loosens all I need is the allen wrench.
By the way the headset will except the 32mm wrenches if one prefers
but they are really not needed.

Re .1 One of the reasons why this new headset interests me is that my
    current headset *is* field adjustable.

It's a typical example of a manufacturer spoiling a good package with a
bit of cost cutting. The bike is a very nice, tight Reynolds 531c
frame/forks with Shimano Ultegra group *except* for that d*** unbranded
headset. The hexagonal part on the bottom ring is about 1/2 mm thick
and needs very special wrenches to get at it. I don't have them
because I don't want to take out the second mortgage on my house that
it would take. The bike shop that I mostly use has tried to set it,
but it works loose after a hundred miles or so.

What I do now is every quarter of an hour or so tighten the headset by
hand. That can do interesting things to the steering on a fast
downhill :-) The headset is also indexed, so if I tighten it a bit too
much, it tends to stick in the fore and aft position. I think I should
take the hint and replace the sucker.

Now all I have to do is wait for the new stuff to arrive in Oz.

    Richard.

My son recently fitted one of the new Mavic headsets on his mountain
bike for the same reasons as .0. The only problem we had was that the
crown race inner diameter was about 0.02 inch too small and I had to
grind it out to fit. It has not required any adjustment since it was
fitted despite some heavy use. The point is that the allen key bit is
to lock the set up so that it cannot move once it has been properly
    adjusted.

1482.7CHRIS KING HEADSET...WMOIS::C_GIROUARDThu Oct 11 1990 08:2611
Question... Boy, I have a lot of them lately...

Anyone out there have experience and (or) information on the
     Chris King headset???

It's supposed to be the "quintessential" "frivolous exotica" of the
    headset world...

     Thanks in advance,

                        Chip
