1476.0. "Need advice on finding right size bike.." by CADSE::MUDGETT () Mon Apr 02 1990 20:08

I'm thinking of buying a bicycle. I haven't had one in years, and
have lately had opportunities to ride but no bike. This seems like
a good place to shop for a second-hand one. I'm looking for a
basic 10-speed, not for racing, just for riding around.

Can anyone tell me how to figure out what size would be right?

I'm female, about 5'1", avg build. The last bike I had was 26" and
way too big. It was a long story and a long time ago - I want to
get one that fits this time!

Any suggestions welcome. I have noticed the "for sale" note and will
    check it out....

The size is measured from seat stay to crank. I think the
26" bike you had was 26" wheels but maybe not.
You should straddle the crossbar and have some clearance
when standing flat footed (approx. one inch).
    	Mountain bikes (three inches).
You probably are looking for 17" to 19".

    Greetings Chris,

From your last name you strike me as a person of great wisdom and
    character!

Note number 1448 is a good one about a woman with similar perdicament
she wound up buying a Terry Bike, which is, as you may read, a bike
that is made for woman's build.

    Happy Hunting,

P.S. Does anyone know when 10 speeds became 12 speeds and why?

Most woman around your size will be fitted to a Terry Frame Style bike
because a woman body proportion is different from a man. Since most of
the high performance bikes these days are built for a man (With the
exception of Terry frame style bikes). Some bike shop will try to fit
you to a 19" mens style bike. In most cases, it will not work because
either your legs will be to long for the bike or you will be too far
stretch out on the top half due to you shorter torsal length.

I would suggest that you get fit kitted at a shop who carries Terry
    Style Frame bikes.
