This past weekend I went back home to NYC. While there I went riding with some friends. It's pretty hard to find some mtn. biking in any of the five borruoghs. We all live in the Bronx and have always used the horse and cross-country running trail at VanCortlandt Pk. There are very few users of this trail, runners and horses included. The trail is tiny, it has one steep climb and one tight descent. After finishing the first lap some park rangers told us that the parks department doesn't want any mtn. biking on the trail anymore. I was pretty shocked since there are only a hand-full of mountain bikers in the area and they probably out number the other users of the trail. Anyway, it never occured to me that all these trail closures could be so far reaching as our little park in the Bronx. now I'm living in NH and am wondering how many trail closures have occured around here. I'm going to go out looking for places to ride soon and would like to know where its ok to ride, absolutely not ok to ride and where can the rules be pushed. So if anyone out there can tell me where to avoid and what places are worth checking out, it would help. Thanks much -Grant

1460.1 | White Mountain Mountain Bike Trail. | BYCYCL::FISHER | Dictionary is not. | Mon Mar 26 1990 14:43 | 10 |
There is a White Mountain Bike Trail which I think is targeted for completion this summer. I know nothing about the location or characteristics of the trail, only that it exists. I get informed of these things because of my position as Pres of the GSW. When I was told of it I thought I could detect a sense of "they actually did this and told me about it afterwards, and to my beautiful mountains, too" in the voice of the person who told me. However it exists and I'll be finding out more about it later. ed |
