ALL are invited to join us!

Is your club participating in local Earth Day activities??

CHARLES RIVER WHEELMEN TO PARTICIPATE IN EARTH DAY

International Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, 1990, will culminate a
week of activity with the purpose of calling attention to the need
for environmental action by politicians, industry and the public.
It is meant to be a long-lasting and meaningful event and will
include a "Green Pledge" consisting of four specific points which
all are encouraged to sign and return.

CRW members are encouraged to participate; along with other area
bike clubs, we are playing a major role in the Boston event. Most
major activities will be on The Esplanade (by Storrow Drive and the
Hatch Shell). (Cambridge and other towns will also have related
activities).

While some details are soft as of this writing, it appears that the
following will be included on the agenda for April 22 in Boston.
See the Boston Globe and its Thursday Calendar Magazine in the weeks
just preceding the event for final details.

o	Opening Ceremonies at Franklin Park (early morning hours)
o	Walk/bike ride from Franklin Park to The Esplanade (11:00)
o	Major Activities (Esplanade, starting mid-morning) including:
    o Environmental Exhibits
o Concert at the Hatch Shell
o	Bike Rides to and from the event (see below)
    o	Much more

With other area bike clubs, CRW is arranging a number of rides to
and from the event. The general public will be encouraged to
accompany us; we want to make a BIG impact in terms of visibility
and are hoping that the number or riders will be in the thousands!
We intend to make it known that cycling is a part of the solution.
Storrow Drive, and possibly other major roads, will be closed to
auto traffic.

All rides will have staggered starting times between 9:00 and 11:00
a.m. (to prevent bunching); CRW members are encouraged to come by
nine. The following starting points are anticipated:

o	Lynn (details to be determined)
    o	Stoneham (Stone Zoo)
o	Lexington (Battle Green, Mass. Ave. and Bedford St.)
o	Newton (Commonwealth Ave at Homer St. near City Hall)
o	Dedham (High St. at Dedham Center)
o	Milton (Houghton Pond parking lot at Blue Hills)
o	Quincy Center (Hancock St. in front of MBTA Station)

All inbound rides will route to the Esplanade. The Dedham, Milton
and Quincy inbound rides will allow the option of stopping at
Franklin Park with a later ride to the Esplanade. Provisions for
secured bike parking are being made, but DO bring a lock (and
helmet). Outbound rides will get under way well before dark (but
bike lighting is suggested just in case).

Bike Clubs will have information booths at the Esplanade to discuss
and hand-out pamphlets on various cycling opportunities.

Again, details are subject to change so please check the Boston
Globe and Calendar Magazine as well as the media in general. For
further specifics related to cycling activities, call the CRW
Bikeline at 617/325-BIKE as the event nears. For general
information, you can also contact the Boston Earth Day office at 41
West St, Boston, MA 02111, 617/542-6333.

This is a major undertaking for the World, Boston and the bike
clubs. Yes, we sure do need help in planning and staffing this
premier environmental event. If you might like to assist, please
call Robin Schulman (508/851-8022 before 9), myself, or leave a
message on the Bikeline.

Thanks, and see you there.

Please do join in. We are hoping for many non-bikers to become
cyclists on this day, so bring all your friends.

If you live in Colorado Springs, get on you Trek or Cannondale
today. No time to waste to get to Boston (but if Boston is too far,
participate in your local events).

CYCLING -- A REASONABLE WAY TO GET TO EARTHDAY

International Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, 1990, culminates a week
and begins a decade of activity with the purpose of calling
attention to the need for environmental action by politicians,
industry and the public. It is meant to be a long-lasting and
meaningful event and will include a "Green Pledge" consisting of
four specific points which all are encouraged to sign and return.

There will be many activities including exhibits, major
environmental and political speakers (including Senator John Kerry)
and a concert with MAJOR name entertainment including Arlo Guthrie,
Tom Rush, Livingston Taylor, the Del Fuegos, Phoebe Snow, Treat Her
Right, and more.

We all have an Earth Day opportunity to re-discover the fascination
of cycling while also promoting its environmental and health
benefits. Please help us make a significant and visible impact. If
you've been seeking a time to re-experience the bicycle, this is it!

A number of Boston area bicycle clubs have organized "spoke" bike
rides to and from the Boston events -- one of these rides is
probably convenient to where you live. All rides have continual
starting times between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Distances are about 8 to
12 miles each way -- about an hour of riding time; riding at your
own pace is encouraged. Maps and instructions will be available at
the ride starting locations (and in the Boston Globe Calendar
Magazine on April 19).

The following starting points have been designated (feel free to
cycle to the start or to join in along the route depending upon your
ability):

o	Revere (North end of Revere Beach parking lot)
o	Stoneham (Stone Zoo Parking Lot)
o	Lexington (Battle Green, Mass. Ave. and Bedford St.)
o	Newton (Commonwealth Ave at Homer St. near City Hall)
o	Dedham (High St. parking lot at Dedham Center)
o	Milton (Houghton Pond parking lot at Blue Hills)
o	Quincy Center (Hancock St. in front of MBTA Station)

All inbound rides will route to the main event on the Boston
Esplanade. The Dedham, Milton and Quincy inbound rides will allow
the option of stopping at Franklin Park for opening ceremonies with
a continuing ride to the Esplanade.

Provisions for secured bike parking at the Esplanade have been made,
but DO bring a lock. Outbound rides will get under way well before
dark. A helmet is always recommended, bike lighting is suggested
just in case, and wear "environmental green" if you can.

The sponsoring cycling clubs are the Boston Area Bicycle Coalition,
The Charles River Wheelmen, and the Greater Boston Council of
American Youth Hostels. These non-profit organizations sponsor
various cycling related programs including rides, safety and
advocacy. Information and knowledgeable members will be available
at ride starting locations and at the Esplanade.

For additional information, including rides which join these rides
from further out, call the Boston Earth Day office at 617/542-6333.
For further information related to specific cycling activities, call
BABC at 617/491-RIDE, CRW at 617/325-BIKE, or AYH at 617/730-8AYH.

Mike,

Can you give me a time schedule of what's going on at the Boston Earth Day
shindig? I'm considering doing a round-trip from the Nashua Earth Day
festivities to Boston and back again, so I'd like to know how the timing would
work out.

Thanks,

kevin

I had heard that there were Bike Rides from many locations into the
Charles River celebration. One of those locations I remembered being
from the Stoneham Zoo. Does anyone have details?
