1404.0. "Bike Treks Cancelled!" by SQLRUS::FISHER (Pat Pending) Tue Jan 09 1990 08:21

I got this 3rd hand but I believe the sources so I'll call it a
"probably reliable rumor."

The Lung Association had a problem getting its money from the organization
which collects the funds for the bike treks. (The rumor says "didn't get
any of their money.") As such they have cancelled all bike trek
operations.

This creates a problem for some riders who have already collected and sent
in funds for next years Trans America Trek.

I can't believe they will stay out of the trekking business for long. But
I do think this represents a tragic turn of events for the charity business
though maybe it will make them look at their affairs more closely.

You heard it here first.

1404.1Who might I ask and which treks?DECWET::BINGHAMJohnTue Jan 09 1990 18:042
    Are you willing to say which trek's and who the rumored organization
    is?
1404.2trans-americaBANZAI::FISHERPat PendingWed Jan 10 1990 07:367
    The trek is at least the trans-america trek though most of the states
    use the same accounting firm. I don't know which it is but I might be
    able to find an old mailer if I looked.

    I would guess that this ought to hit the news sometime.

    I received a letter from the ALA stating that the reason for the
    problem was that the company that organizes the treks (something or
    other associates, which is based in Seattle) was having financial
    difficulties and that it was going to affect the treks.

    I hope that the rumours are not true, though. You heard it here last.

1404.4Tim Kneeland and AssociatesDECWET::BINGHAMJohnThu Jan 11 1990 16:593
    The organization I am familiar with who does (did) the TransAmerica,
    Pacific Coast and some shorter ones was Tim Kneeland and Associates
    in Seattle. I was wondering if it was the organization.
1404.5Directly from the Washington ALADECWET::BINGHAMJohnFri Jan 12 1990 16:3230
    From the National American Lung Associaton:

    1) National ALA cancelled TransAmerica Trek and Pacific Coast Trek for
       1990.

    2) All money collected by riders had been turned over to National
       American Lung Association. When a ride is done, the donations
       are placed in a special account that goes directly to the ALA.
       There is no way the ALA could not get the money collect.

    3) In dispute is the Tim Kneeland and Associates billing for expenses
       of running the rides.

    4) Tim Kneeland and Associates is going out of business.

    5) The Tri-Island Trek (Puget Sound, Washington state) will continue
       to be done. The Washington ALA has hired Hilary Howarth (previously
       of Tim Kneeland & Associates) to run the fundraiser. She is a full
       time employee of the WALA.

    6) The local ALA does not necessarily support the National decision
       to cancel the rides.

    7) There is a potential for the TRANS America & Pacific Coast to be
       done sometime in the future.

    8) As the for cancelled 1990 rides, there is a special team of people
       contacting all the riders and volunteers. The option is for the
       contributors to donate the $ anyways or have it returned.

1404.6I was hoping some of the local ones would keep goingNOVA::FISHERPat PendingFri Jan 12 1990 16:493
