1387.0. "LeMond is SI Sportsman of the Year" by VERVE::BUCHANAN (Bat) Wed Dec 20 1989 13:03

Just heard on the radio that Sports Illustrated's 1989 Sportsman of the
Year is Greg LeMond. Hard to argue with that.

Yes, I heard that too, on a local radio broadcast. Added to the
announcment was that he now lives here in the Minneapolis area. Kind
of makes me proud, but at the same time, I can't see him getting much
riding in with the weather being as it is (-70 Deg F windchill this
morning, with -25 F. real degrees below zero forcast for tonight).

Maybe I see him around this spring!

According to a recent article, he goes x-c skiing (skating actually) twice a
day, and does short (1/2 hour) intense wind-trainer workouts.

Kevin...wishing he were anywhere that's warm...

I read the article today. I don't know why but I felt a certain sort of pride
while reading the article. Kind of like if I had grown up in Lemonds home town
and knew him personally. It's funny when any baseball player or football player
was sportman of the year, I could of cared less, even though I played these
sports. I guess it's the whole Hollywood script like story; Hero-tragedy turns
hero again or the unknown gets recognized. Whatever it is, it's great to see
him get the award. He seems to be quite a gentleman and this will do great
things for the respect of cycling as a SPORT in the US.
