I'm hesitant to post this to this notes file but I'm semi-desperate. I need to give a recommendation for stationary bikes to fit-up a Wellness Center at a new facility (NU0 in Nashua, NH). I saw an article comparing a few brands recently. I think it was in the December issue of Bicycling which I managed to toss. I've looked in a few places for another copy with no luck. What I'm interested in is the style which allow for "proper" positioning but can also go to the normal upright position most stationaries have. Better I'd like to get a style which has standard mounting for the saddle and pedals so that they can be replaced easily and people can put on their own equipment if they want. LifeCycles are out due to cost. I seem to recall from the article that there were reasonable bikes in the $900 range. Recommendations, pointers, places to call, etc. would all be greatly appreciated. Russ

One thing to watch out for is the width of the 'bottom bracket' on the stationary bike. ie. how far apart, axially, the pedals are. I bought a Sears recumbent (what else?) stationary bike and found that it was almost totally useless for me because the axle that the pedals was mounted on was about 3" wider than normal bottom brackets. This threw off cleat angles, stressing knees, and just felt awkward. - Chris ps. Of course, you've seen enough info to avoid the linear resistance bikes and go for the exponential, fan type, resistance? - C

A recent issue of Bicycling (I think!) had an article about stationary bikes. If you can't find it, send mail - I might be able to dig it up. [ no promises :-) ] chris

I gave Russ my copy of the December issue of Bicycling. I could have xeroxed it, but then he wouldn't be able to look at the pictures. Scott |
