[ This also placed in the notesfile COLORADO_BICYCLING. ] I have some advance info on the 1990 "Pedal the Peaks" tour. The PtP tour is similar in concept the the "Ride the Rockies" tour but each day's ride is longer. [ Both are rides through scenic parts of Colorado. -Bob ] This year's PtP is not associated with Coors. Instead there is an affiliation with a "national charitable organization that helps clothe and feed the less fortunate people". I don't know who that could be, however it means the entry fee is tax deductible. DATE: June 24 - 29, 1990 COST: about $120 PEOPLE: limited to 600 (looks like first-come-first served, not random) ROUTE: day 1: Durango to South Fork (109 miles) day 2: South Fork to Lake City (73 miles) day 3: Lake City to Montrose (102 miles) day 4: Montrose to Telluride (70 miles) day 5: Telluride to Cortez (74 miles) day 6: Cortez to Durango (46 miles) Note the two century rides. The longest day's ride in the 1989 Ride the Rockies was about 70. Sooo, if you intend to go, get LOTS of practice miles. I certainly plan to. If you haven't done a multi-day ride you'll soon find (as I did!) that your hands, neck, shoulder and butt get very tired because of the unaccustomed strain. There was a note of a possible course change because of anticipated road construction on Red Mtn Pass. HOW TO SIGN UP: Contact David or Susan Rice at (303)797-7001 to get on the mailing list.

Maybe they should rename it the "lactic acid 600"!! Sounds like it would be a great challenge and a worthy cause (although Coors is one of my favorite charities too :-)). One thing's for sure, you better bring some granny gears! While not competitive, that much mountain climbing will assure a few lung searing, thigh burning afternoons in the Colorado high country.
