Yesterday The was an article in the Boston University Newspaper "The Daily Free Press" about an increase in bike thefts this year. In all of these thefts the thief was able to break a Kryptonite lock. Aparently theives are able to a piece of pipe between the "U" section, twist, and the lock breaks. Paul

True, in the May 88 issue of Bicycling there was an article where the author a "bike thief" wrote on how he stole bikes. This pipe way of opening the K-lock is known as the "New York method". BTW, Kryptonite used to have a $1000 insurance policy for the lock holders...It's no longer valid for New York residents. I'm sure in other city's,(such as Boston), thieves will learn via the grapevine how to pop open the lock and there will no longer be the $1000 FREE insurance offered by the Kryptonite marketing people. I've seen some people using Kryptonite locks with an extra piece of metal at the junction. I've also heard of people going into hardware stores and getting a plumbing T-joint and using it as reinforcement. Does anyone know if these are effective? -Jeff (Who parks in Boston from time to time.) |
