1321.0. "ATB fun during New England winters?" by SYSENG::BITTLE (Nancy Bittle - hardware engineer; LSE) Mon Oct 02 1989 01:17

What is mountain biking in the winter like?

I am very new to biking (started with one 33-mile tour and a
few < 10 mile off-road rides since) and as a transplanted
Floridian, am fairly new to snow (last winter didn't count,
right?). I live close to some conservation land that is
lots of fun to ride on, and am trying to imagine what it
will be like in the winter with snow, mud and ice...

            Just how practical is it?

[any suggestions of good locations for off-road riding
{winter or summer} in the greater Maynard area would also be
appreciated - or a pointer if it's been discussed before]

                                                    nancy b.

Riding in the snow is a blast. With a mountain bike, you're also
usually going slow enough that the cold doesn't become a serious
    problem.

I second that motion!! Riding in the winter adds an extra challenge
and the extra cloth don't seem as bad as when you are riding on
the road. Riding in deep snow is just about impossible though,
it is like riding in deep sand. The only word of caution I can
give (based on tooo much past experience) is that ice is SLIPPERY!
be very carefull with you brakes. They make studded snow tires
for mountain bikes, they might be worth looking into. Wear warm
gloves and something to cover you ears (under your HELMET).

It is really a blast to plow though 3-4" of new snow!

    Enjoy,
    Quinn

The best part about riding in the winter is sliding in snow. You
really have to work at making that rear wheel grab. The only caution I
have to watch out for ICE. I've had a couple of nasty falls on ice
    over the years.

    Go for it.

If we get snow around here...
