Has anybody crossed Nevada? A friend is crossing the country solo and is interested on experiences people have. I've seen lots of bikers (really loaded down) on I80, and the 500 miles is sort of evenly split between Reno, Winnemuca, Elko, and Salt Lake. US 50 is billed as the lonliest highway in the US, but is a better way to to an intermediate destination of Gunnison, Colorado. I have never been on US 50. Did anybody ride at night? How much water per day is required (2-3 gal?) What specific problems were encountered? Is a ticket on a Reno to Salt Lake Greyhound the way to cross Nevada with a bike? tanks! _KB

I crossed Nevado about 5 years ago on a bike. It's NOWHERE land out there! We took I80 and as you said the distance is evenly split bettween towns. There is VERY little traffic out there, and there are no signs telling you not to ride a bike on the interstate. I had problems from heat exhaustion about 30 miles outside of Winnemuca. It wasn't pretty! We ran into a work crew on the highway and got some water from them. Take lots of water!!! We had 3 water bottles on each of our bikes (2), plus a thermos of cold water and still ran out! The only time we rode at night was to cross the Salt flats. That's 100 miles worth of NOTHING!! It's so hot that you can still see the heat waves rising up off the road at 4am. Get a headlight for your bike! You'll need it if you ride at night! As for a bus..... We rode from NY, to Calif and then took a bus home. In my opinion a bus is nothing more than a Bad neighborhood on Wheels!! S |
