| I'd try calling the Chamber of Commerce for names and phone numbers.
Good luck.

| There are two state campgrounds on Mt Desert I.: Blackwoods and Seawall.
Blackwoods is a little closer to Bar Harbor, but it requires
reservations after June 15 or so.
Sea Wall is on the left lobe of the island. Sites are handed out
on a 'first come' basis. July 4 weekend might be a busy one.
The whole island is 40 or 50 miles across, so route planning isn't
really a problem. Be warned: the AMC map has a few errors in the road
names. The trails are all OK though.
Be sure to go up Cadillac mountain.

1225.3 | Try looking up Acadia, too | TOOK::R_WOODBURY | why silver bullets!?!? ... | Tue Jun 27 1989 14:54 | 8 |

Also, I'll try to remember to look for some info. at home. There are
private campgrounds outside the park on the southwest side which are
probably what you're looking for (I don't think they allow camping
inside the park). There's a bike shop in Bar Harbor that could probably
give you advice if you called (of course I forget the name).

1225.4 | There IS camping within Acadia | DELNI::GRACE | life is unpredictable; eat dessert first | Wed Jun 28 1989 02:53 | 7 |
| I believe that Blackwood in Acadia National Park (& prob'ly Seawall)
BOTH allow camping. What a beautiful place.
I'd call the park (sorry I don't know the number), and verify that they
aren't already booked solid for the holiday weekend at Blackwood.
Good luck

1225.5 | I had a great time | CIMAMT::CHINNASWAMY | The Mindless Cannibal | Wed Jun 28 1989 09:09 | 25 |
| I camped and biked in Acadia last labor day weekend. We stayed at
Blackwoods campground which IS located within the park. We had to
pay a five dollar park fee just to get our car into the campground.
The five dollars will cover you for a week I believe. I can't say
enough about the place. We had what I would consider to be the best
camp site I have stayed in. It wasn't big on creature comforts but
it was only a short walk to the rocky shore line. The sites are
far enough apart that you don't feel cramped. If you are in shape
and have a mountain or touring bike then definately ride up to
Cadillac (sp?) mountain to watch the sun come up. I didn't trust the
brakes on my pseudo racing bike to attempt the ride down which is
very steep and curvy. You can reserve a camp sight in Blackwoods
and Seawall I think by simply going to one of the ticket services.
I can't remember whether it was Ticketmaster or Ticketron. You pay
something like 10.00 a day for the sites. You are not guaranteed
any particular site though. We were assigned our site by the ranger
at the entrance to the camp ground. However, we were VERY pleased with
what we got. The ticket service will let you know if they are booked
for a particular time. When we went, Seawall was booked and blackwoods
was close to if not fully booked by the time we got there.
Send me mail if you need to know more.

1225.6 | More Campgrounds | TOOK::R_WOODBURY | why silver bullets!?!? ... | Fri Jun 30 1989 17:51 | 19 |
| Hope it's not too late but I just remembered to check my Acadia
materials (I save everything). According to the Park Map:
"Accommodations. The park has two campgrounds; many private one are
nearby. Villages offer hotels, motels, rooming houses and restaurants.
After June 15 camping in the park's Blackwoods campground is by
reservation. Reservations are accepted by mail only. Camping at Seawall
is first-come, first-served. Camping in the park is limited to 14
days."
The paper "Out & About in Down East Maine", which you can pick up
everywhere, has the following listings for private (commercial)
campgrounds:
Bar Harbor Campground, Rte. 3 288-5185
Hadley Pt. Campground, 288-4808
Bass Harbor Campground, Rte. 102a 244-5857
Mt. Desert Campground, Rte 198 244-3710
