I am in the market for a new bike in the $500-$600 range. One of the many subjects about which I am ignorant are the relative advantages and disadvantages of elliptical and round chainrings. I'm told that the elliptical rings provide greater acceleration because they provide mechanical advantage through leverage. They also tend to be more expensive, however. Although I notice a difference between elliptical and round, I haven't been able to develop a preference in my limited test riding. Are the elliptical rings worth the extra money? Holding all other factors constant, what sort of time advantage would they offer a reasonably competent rider (my objective) in a 25 mile time trial?

Check out notes 441 and 685. I think I can summarize what's been said so far: MTB riders -- Most if not all consider these de rigeur. Road Racers -- Mixed opinions o Some concerned that it hurts their spin (100 rpm plus) o Some convinced that the small ring helps in climbs. o Some complained that the elliptical rings can cause a dropped chain under race conditions. I think an honest answer to your question about time advantage in a TT is ZERO. The choice is simply a matter of style/personal preference. |
