1195.0. "need info for travel" by KRAPPA::ROWLEY () Mon Jun 05 1989 18:17

    	I am looking for info. I just won my district race Sunday. the
    race was a crit. I was wondering if you can tell me how to get to
    Park City, Utah The cheapest way - by bus,train or plane. How do
    I transport my bike on these.
    	I would like to go to the National Championship. But my pocket
    tell me if I go or not. Thats why I need to find the cheapest way
    to get there.

Mike aren't you a Cat 4? I hate to burst your bubble but the nationals
are only for people who qualify in the Cat 1,2,3 race. According to USCF
rules, Cat 4 riders aren't allowed in Category "A" races and all National
Championships are "A" races.

BTW, Congratulations

    Way to go Mike! If there is a Cat IV race then definitely fly.
    It only takes about 4 1/2 hours as compared to several days by train
    or bus. I think there are some notes in here re. flying with your
    bike. But, hey, it already sounds like you can fly on your bike!

There is no cat 4 race.

1195.6Utah here I come!!!!KRAPPA::ROWLEYWed Jun 07 1989 22:5815
    	I am getting up graded to cat III so I can race in the crit
    at national. I have place enough time to get upgrated I was going
    to wait till next year. But I been doing very well in my last races
    7,7,2,1. one of those 7 places I would of won but my cleat came
    out in the final sprint. so I finish with one leg. there was 12
    of us in that sprint. I have some places from last year thats going
    to help me up grade.
    	So I still need help getting there. I have sponsers that are
    sending me. I need to know how to send my bike with me. I live in
    springfield area. is there any stores I can rent a bike bag. to
    travel with. The district road race is this sunday. I hope to win
    that. I like those medals. gold that is.

1195.7Hate to be the bearer of bad newsAKOV11::COHENAndrew B. CohenWed Jun 07 1989 23:3327
Mike, I hate to be the one who keeps giving you bad news. What you should
do is sit down and have a long talk with Tom Vinson to get a clear picture
of what's going on.

First, the district crit. does not qualify you to do the National Crit.
Championship. Maybe in a couple of years it will, but for now, it's just
a race that you have to pay for, and get no cash for placing. It's just
an excuse to race. Besides, they're trying to get as much use out of Ninigret
now that it has been paved. Entry to the National Crit. is on a first-come
first-served basis. Also, I may be wrong, but I think that you may have
had to qualify in either the TT or road race to do the crit.

Secondly, even if it did qualify. You would have to qualify in the 1,2,3
race. You didn't, you won the cat 4 race, once again, congratulations, but
you aren't (or weren't) a cat 3.

Thirdly, if you have read your rule book, specifically, page 25, section 11,
Part 1: Category A - National. Entry in Category A races is restricted to:
Category 1 and 2 riders for senior events........ Category A races include...
National Championships...

Mike, save your sponsors money. If you go out to Utah, all that will happen
is that you will watch from the sidelines some good racing; but you won't be
participating yourself.

Lastly, if you haven't upgraded already, DO NOT ASK THE DISTRICT REP. TO DO IT
THE DAY OF THE DISTRICT ROAD RACE. This is a sure way to get on his bad side.
1195.8still able to race.KRAPPA::ROWLEYFri Jun 09 1989 16:5512
    	The National Crit does not need you to prequalify in any event.
    they just take the first 300 people. Sat july 15 they will have
    three heat of a 100 people in each heat. from that they take 100
    top finisher to race Sunday for the National title. I know better
    than to try to up grade at race day.
    	I will still be able to go. This is my dream and I will not stop
    at nothing to get it. Plus if you don't qualify in your catagory
    you can send a letter to the dirictor of the race. and if you can
    prove you are good enough you can be able to race.
