1187.0. "Here little crank bolt, where are you?" by RICKS::SPEAR (MYCROFTXXX) Tue May 30 1989 10:02

Yesterday my cousin and I went for a ride around Wachusett Reservior, going
our River Road, then hooking up with Rt. 62 in Berlin. Just after the
railroad tracks is a steep little hill and I heard Jim yell out something
about "trouble". When I got back to him, he was holding the left crank-arm
and pedal in his hands!

As best as we can guess, we loosened the bolt on his bike this past winter when
we were trying to figure out how to use an extractor. We never got around
to repacking his bottom bracket, and even left off the dust cap. He had
done about 75 miles before CLUNK!

So, if any of you see a bolt on the side of the road, please send it to me!
:-) And remember to keep your dust caps on.

But (semi)seriously folks, if any of you have any old bolts sitting around,
it would keep Jim from buying a new bottom bracket or combing hardware stores.

Thanks,
Chris

it should be easy to find a repl. crank bolt from a bike shop..... I've
probably got a bunch of spares myself, but after just moving, the chance
of finding 'em ... it was tough just finding the bike!

As for your orig. note, regarding dust caps - I think there was somewhat
of a discussion, probably on another topic, as to whether this is a good
idea (leaving 'em on) - for me, ditch 'em fast! They tend to collect
water and rust the crank bolts, plus they hit my ankle when I pedal!
