1184.0. "How much can I eat today?" by BLKWDO::ARBUCKLE (WIZARD) Thu May 25 1989 13:00

There was an article in a recent Bicycling Magazine that showed
how to figure calories burned on a bike ride. I has a number of
fairly involved calculations that lend themselves well to a spreadsheet
application. Since I kinda enjoy this stuff anyway, I have set-up a
DECcalc grid that does all of the calculations. You need to enter the
    following information:

    		Average speed of ride (mph)
    		Weight of rider (pounds)
    		Duration of ride (minutes)
    		Terrain
    			Climbing percentage (Loop ride)
    			Feet climbed/descended (Point-to-point ride)
    		Wind
    			Relative strength (Loop ride)
Head/tail wind speed in mph (Point-to-point ride)
Cross-wind speed in mph (Either type of ride)
Position (% of ride sitting up)
    		Drafting (% of ride drafted)

I found the results interesting and informative, though I'm sure
I won't use this all the time. If there is interest, I can make the
grid more useable and available on the network. Anyone interested?

I'm interested, tho it seems like it would be a very loose approximation since
some of the data would probably have to be estimated.

    Sure, I'm game.

I got the bicycling article and, after using it some, I would sure
    appreciate it being on line.

Great, now I get to go out shopping for a point to point

1184.5Here is the location for the spreadsheetBLKWDO::ARBUCKLEWIZARDThu May 25 1989 15:3949

OK...here is where you can get it. File you need is at:

    		TEMPE::[DECNET]CALORIES.CALC$GRD

Here are instruction on how to use it.

All entries will be made in Column B, so position your cursor
in column B, at the row marked Average Speed.

    	1. Enter your average speed over the ride (or portion of ride)
    	   you want evaluated.
    	2. Enter rider's weight.
    	3. Enter duration of the ride in minutes
    	4. Terrain - you should make an entry in only one of these
    	   three cells
    		a. If your ride was a loop, or out-and-back course, then enter
the percentage of your ride that was spent climbing.
    		b. If your ride was point-to-point, determine the number
of feet climbed or descended over the ride and enter
    		   in the appropriate cell.
    	5. Wind - you should make an entry in only one of these two cells
    		a. If, on a loop course, the wind changed to significantly
effect your ride, enter .03 for a small wind, .04 for
a moderate wind, or .05 for a strong wind. If it was
a tail wind, enter a negative number, if it was a head
wind, enter as a positive number.
    		b. If, on a point-to-point course, there was a head or tail
wind, enter the speed of the wind. If it was a tail wind,
enter a negative number, if it was a head wind, enter as
    		   a positive number.
    	6. Cross Wind - If there was a cross-wind, enter the speed of the
    	   wind.
    	7. Enter the percentage of your ride that was spent in an upright
    	   position.
    	8. Enter the percentage of your ride that was spent drafting
    	   someone else.

All of the calculations are taken from the recent article in
Bicycling Magazine. For details on how they were arrived at, check
the public library or a friend's copy.

Has anyone else had any problem copying this over to their account?
Apparently, the file got deleted after I put it in the DECNET account.
I have since put it back. Let me know if there are still problems
getting your copy over the network.

PS. When I get a chance I will type out the formulae for the
spreadsheet. you can also pull a copy of the grid over and
look at it yourself if you're in a hurry.

Just tried to copy it, and it wasn't there. Some system managers clean out
DECNET accounts on a nightly basis. Maybe that's the problem.

1184.11This is ridiculous!!BLKWDO::ARBUCKLEWIZARDMon Jun 12 1989 19:5017

    	This is getting frustrating...

I didn't expect this much trouble getting this out to people,
but I didn't count on the system mangler getting involved, censoring
what I could put in the DECNET account.

The file itself is located in my directory as follows:

    	sancho::$1$dus21:[arbuckle.decalc_grids]

The file name is the same as I noted before. I truly hope this
works, but if it doesn't I'm open to suggestions...
