1164.0. "CONSOLIDATE CYCLING NOTES - YEA OR NAY" by USCTR1::PJOHNSON () Tue May 16 1989 11:57

The recent controversy regarding the need for two notes files,
CYCLE_RACING vs BICYCLING, has led me to write this note. I've
often thought that it would be easier for bicycling entusiasts
to have both racing and general purpose bicycling dialogue in
a single file. Perhaps racing could be treated as a seperate
    note. Let's take a vote.

I vote to merge CYCLE_RACING notes into the BICYCLING notes file.
Therefore I won't always be checking two places for information
    about my personal passion.

Because CYCLE_RACING has its own feel which would be swamped in the
larger file. I'm very much against this idea.

    That's a B - I - G negative for the merge. I agree that they're
two differnet worlds and should stay separated.

No! No! A thousand times No!

However I would like to suggest that we get an active moderator in
CYCLE_RACING. By that I mean someone who will move misplaced notes to their
proper topic, eliminate redundancy and delete notes that just don't belong.

I vote to combine the two! I have been reading them both for sometime
now and don't see why they are perceived to be so unique. I also wave
to all other cyclists while riding...

The Cycle racing is a conference covering a specific aspect of
bicycling -- Racing. It is not a generic conference and the effect
of merging the two would not be additive.

Novice/recreational/touring riders might be scared off from asking
questions in a conference where a lot of the discussions revolve around
racing and race results, (this happened in the Audio notes file and was
one of the reasons that the Audio_engineering notesfile was created).
People who want to go into notes and read/discuss racing realted topics
may not want to wade through "yet another note on which bike should I
buy". Not that these discussions aren't imformative for those who
    ask them.

Keep them seperate and keep them interesting to those who read them.

I agree, the notes are different. Although I don't see the note as
CYCLE_RACING but as CYCLE_RACING_NEWS conf. I think the average questions about
how to race should be asked in this conf and have racing news in the other.

However I agree with previous replies. DON'T, DON'T start ratholes
about which files certain things belong in. Also a moderator to
better organize CYCLE_RACING would help. Sometimes, I don't have
time to read both files but if I am specifically trying to find results
of a particular race then I will access C_R instead of this conf. and
save myself some time. I have been very happy with how things have
been running, small changes can help things but drastic ones may cause
problems.

It sounds like the NAYs have it. I should have known, I've yet to back
a winner in a Presidential election. Maybe we should have a:

    	CYCLE_TOURING
    	CYCLE_REPAIR
    	CYCLE_BUY/SELL
    	CYCLE_EQUIPMENT
    	MOUNTAINBIKE
    	ETC.

    If so what should we discuss in the BICYCLING file? :-}

No, but only just. If the moderators can keep the race results in
CYCLE_RACING and the other stuff in BICYCLE, I vote No to the proposed
merger. However, at present there is a lot of confusion.

How about renaming CYCLE_RACING to CYCLE_RACING_NEWS as suggested
earlier? This would encourage people to use the right Notes file, as
the names are not sufficiently different at present.

1164.20Trying to solve CYCLE_RACING's moderator problemCHEOPE::JOHNSONTruth is stranger than fictionWed May 17 1989 09:237
Right now, the CYCLE_RACING conference effectively does not have
a moderator. I've been in contact with the system manager to try
to remedy the situation, but everything's not settled yet. If I
take over moderating the conference [which is probable], I'll try
to implement many of the suggestions put forward in this note.

    	1. John W. - please delete .21 (I couldn't - why? [playing with
    new editor: a mistake])

    	2. I like the separation of serious racers/racing in the other
file (which I read at Tour de France time), and the commuter,
recreational rider, novice racer/time trialer here. The ability
and dedication/focus of serious racers is a mindset quite different
from that which prevails among most of this conference's readers.
I prefer to be able to chat in a less intimidating atmosphere than
the one that surrounds the racing conf. - Chris
