This month's issue of Bicycling Magazine has an article on bicycle
grease. Of course, this article has to come out a week after I
finished repacking all the bearings on my touring bike with plain
old CyclePro white lithium grease. :-(
Anyway, the article talks about grease viscosity, consistency,
additives, etc. They also reviewed a dozen or so different
bicycle greases and listed their specs, if they are available.
Two of the more interesting greases were Bull Shot and Finish
Line. These were developed especially for bicycle use. Finish
Line uses Teflon, an ingredient I firmly believe in. The Bull
Shot specs and ingredients were not disclosed. Surprisingly,
nothing was said about Super Lube, a grease which is commonly seen
in bicycle shops in this area.
What I am curious about is what types of grease you DIY bike
mechanics use on your bicycles, and why you prefer this over other
brands? Anyone ever try Super Lube grease?
Thanks,
Denis

1160.1 | white automotive grease | LDP::MELNYK | Andy | Mon May 15 1989 17:49 | 9 |
| Well, i use plain old white grease, the sort used for lubricating
door hinges on cars. Its cheap and satisfactory, but then i'm a
recreational rider and not a racer. There are probably better
greases available; i've had a notion of trying the clear silicone
grease (without zinc oxide in it) that is sometimes used on heat
sinks. It might last a little longer; cleaning and greasing
bearings on a bicycle is a tedious and messy job.

| I've had good luck for the last 15 years or so with Phil Wood Grease.
It's kinda expensive on a per tube basis, but then it takes a couple
years to use up a tube, so I guess I can afford 1 or 2 dollars a year
for maintenance on 4 bikes....
