1154.0. "Stuck shoes/pedals" by OTOU01::BUCKLAND (There's no room in this space to write anything significant) Tue May 09 1989 11:58

I recently bought my son (16) an '88 Centurian Ironman Master for
Christmas. This comes with the Shimano Ultegra pedals from which he
removed the clips. He added to this a pair of Shimano shoes.

The problem that he has is that the shoes tend to lock solidly to the
pedals. One time he even fell over because he was stationary and
couldn't get the shoes to release.

Any suggestions as to what the problem/cure might be.

Thanks,
	Bob

1154.1Allen Wrench Adjustment?EXIT26::SAARINENTue May 09 1989 16:1210
    Wow...what a nice father...Nice Bike...Lucky Son.

    I don't own a bike with Shimano Ultegra Pedals...but I assume
    there has to be a tension adjustment in the pedal itself that
    you can adjust the quick release mechanism to unlock easier.

    Is there anything on the pedals that have an Allen wrench adjustment
    that might be able to be made?

	Problem: Inexperience or cleat slot too narrow
	Solution: Practice or widen the slot in the cleat.

    The Shimano Ultegra pedal is a bit more than an ordinary cleat.
    About an inch and a half in front of the cleat plate is a pair
    of diagonal plates so that the cleat fits firmly wedged between
    these 3 pieces of metal as well as locked tightly onto the
    cleat plate. The cleat itself looks like some kind of look pedal
    hybrid for normal pedals.

    Have him try rocking his foot to get it to loosen. Other than
    thaqt use a reqally thin file to enlarge the gap in the cleat.

    I imagine that once this gets solved he'll have to put the toe clips
    back on.

    This pedal is a good innovation that will go nowhere because of the
    clipless pedal revolution.

1154.4I have Clipless PedalsUSHS11::HARVEYWed May 10 1989 11:229
    I have LOOK clipless pedals and they are very similar to the Shimano
    Ultegras. I fell alot when I first started using them.

    The way I get out of the pedal is by twisting my heel(right heel
    to the right, left to the left) to the outside. I haven't fallen
    down lately, so this works.

There are 2 different Ultegra pedals. One is a LOOK clone, the other a
somewhat tradition pedal w/ toeclip and strap as Ed, and the author of the
base note, described.
