1146.0. "Cycling and camping in Germany and Cz." by SX4GTO::HOLT (Hi! I'm Don Corleone) Wed May 03 1989 17:56

(also posted in ON_THE_ROAD and GERMANY)

This summer I will be flying to Frankfurt/Main on AA.

I will be taking along my bicycle as accompanied baggage.
It will go into the cargo hold in its own container
which I would like to store somewhere on or near the
airport whilst I cycle through Bohemia.

My question is: does Flughafen Rhein-Main have some sort
of long term storage for such containers?

Another question: Has anyone bicycled extensively in
Germany or Bohemia? I'd be interested in hearing someone
    else's experiences...

Write to Dave Linnus at CYBORG::D_LINNUS. He's in Maynard and lives
in Fitchburg. He toured Europe last summer on his bike. The best
things he had to say about Europe was Germany. Sounds like you're
in for a wonderful time and man, am I jealous!

I'm sure he can provide some very valuable info. He'll be more than
happy to extend a hand. Have fun & hope this helps you out.

Hi,

I spent (only) two weeks cycling throughout Bavaria and Franken last
September. The countryside is so beautiful and the people were extremely
friendly. The culinary highlights were the beer, pastries and the bread,
especially when you were out of the cities and the tourist traps.

If I can be a further help, send mail to adt::oxenberg

Oh yes, I did store my bicycle (boxed) overnight at the Frankfurt
airport, for a small fee, I don't know if they have long term storage.

If the Czechs can get me my visa forms soon, I'll be able to
    come in July.

Do they offer visas at the frontier? Their Washington, DC embassy
seems awfully leisurely about sending the forms...

How is the camping in the Frankenwald/Bohmerwald? Are farmers willing
to let a cyclist put a tent up for a night (with of course their
    permission)?

[Please excuse this reply, which has nothing to do with cycling....]

Back when I was living in Iran (a long story in itself), a friend's
family was planning a trip to Prague. They applied for visas, but
as their date of departure arrived, nothing showed up. They went
to their travel agent to figure out what to do. The travel agent
said, "Don't worry, they'll give you a visa when you arrive. The
    Czechs are hungry for tourists!"

The family arrives in Czechslovakia, and asks for visas. The Czechs
tell them that they can't get visas at the border, and put them
on the next flight out of the country.

Policys may have changed in the last 12 years, but I WOULDN'T RISK
    IT.

    The visa application just arrived.

I wonder what they want me to put down for vehicle make,
    registration, serial #...?

    Bike, Mountain, KHS, 1 each...
