Yes, even the best of things break. I broke off one of the indexing teeth in my Dura-Ace shift levers. It not only misses shifts but that wouldn't be so bad if I could just switch it to friction mode but it will not switch, some how the break jammed things up. On the ride home last night I met a guy who said that Dura-Ace has a life-time guarantee and I should just go and get a new one. This would be great but I've never heard of it. The bike is 2 years old with about 12,000 miles so I kind of expect these things to happen. Assuming that I can't get a new set free can I at least save some money and use Shimano 600 or even the new 7-speed 105 levers? Dura-Ace levers are about $50! The cheapest way it to give up indexing and go with a pair of SunTour Sprint levers for about $15. On my last bike I switched the Superbe levers for these and loved them, unfortunately I must have thrown out the Superbe levers. Has anyone ever voluntarily given up indexed shifting (Campy doesn't count of course)?

No, the instructions for the 600 ultegra components say that they are not compatible with the Dura-Ace. Is it six speed Dura-Ace or 7? I have a 6-spd rt DA shifter and related parts that I could offer for sale (as a reply to note 2 of course :-) :-) ). ed | |||||
1125.2 | Part on order | VERVE::BUCHANAN | Bat | Fri Apr 21 1989 21:36 | 11 |
Answering my own question: I stopped by a shop a noon today and they also told me that the 600 and 105 levers are not compatible. However you can replace the inner piece where the tooth broke without replacing everything. They got it into friction mode and ordered the part. By the way the shop is Wheelsmith in Palo Alto and they supply spokes to the PDM team and they are very pleased about Sean Kelly's win in the Leige- Bastogne-Leige last weekend. |
