    I might as well register, I've plugged it enough in the other notes.
    
    I'm Tim Brightman.  I'm a contractor, working in NKS500, on Nickerson
    Rd, Marlboro.  My DTN is 291-9681.
    
    I did the ride last year and had a great time.  I'm getting ready to
    send in my registration form, but I'm trying to find someone to put
    down to room with at Mass Maritime.  Last year I ended up assigned to
    the gymnasium (sp?).
    
    Maybe we could get together some weekend for a ride before the PMC.

    I think you've got a great idea there, Harry; I'm not sure at this time
    how to go about getting a corporate contribution.  I'm also doing
    the American Lung Association Ride this Fall....also thinking about
    Corporate contribution.  We can toss around some ideas about this if
    you'd like.  My concern is that "everyone" has a "pet" project and
    hopes the company gives $$$$$;  I think that may be a reason why
    it may be difficult to get a committment from them.
    
    Please contact me and we can talk (write) about it.....everyone else
    reading this note is also invited to participate.

	count me in again this year, it will be my fifth Pan-Mass ride.
	Never being good on raising pledges, my incentive has grown due to the 
	fact that I missed the ride last year because I attended the funeral of 
	my roommates mother, She passed away with cancer.  I'll definitely
	be there this year.

	I'm a contractor so the concept of corporate funds do not pertain
	to me, but I wish all the others riders luck with there pledges.

	I'm currently working at DLB9 in Marlboro.  Anyone wanting to ride
	this summer I'll be doing my long weeknight ride on wed., speed
	work on thurs. and a bike/run combo on Fridays.  Also I'm looking
	for long rides for Sundays.  

	my cycling etiquette needs to be polished for pack riding,  I
	usually train alone and don't draft much when I'm in a pack until
	I'm about to be dropped (which is often).   This all stems from the
	fact I mainly do triathlons.

	hope to see allot of you at the Pan-Mass challenge this year.

	OK Folks,  The weekend is here.  Who's actually riding this year.

	I'll be there,  This will be my first year staying over at the 
	Sheraton in Sturbridge on Friday. I'm hoping to attend the pasta
	dinner there on Friday (if travel plans can be worked out).

	I know with 900 2-day riders and ??? 1-day riders finding each
	other will be hard, BUT......  I ride a Blue Vitus with chilo(sp)
	written on it. I also have Scott DH triathlon handlebars with
	blue/white fade tape.  

	And if you want to find me sat. just look for this years PMC
	jersey I'll be one of only 1000+ with it on.

	Hope to see allot of you there.

    Count me in. I'll be the one with toothpicks in my eyes ( I'm going
    to a wedding the night before). I'm hoping that my enthusiasm will 
    make up for the lack of sleep and carry me through. See you(?) there!

    BTW - Where do we store our bikes on Saturday night? 

    I'll also be in the Sheraton on Friday night, and on my trusty Shogun
    Touring bike (Alpine GT) Saturday and Sunday. I assume there'll be some
    sort of facilities for storage at the Mass. Maritime Academy barracks
    on Saturday night, but I'll be bringing my trusty Kryptonite cable lock
    with me anyway.

    You store your bike in your room with you, or if your one of the
    lucky and get assigned the gym, then you store it there with you.
    
    Good luck with the sleep.  With all the people there you won't feel
    tired until you get to Bourne. I bet you don't do much dancing to
    the band sat. night.  I learnd all this 3 years ago by work 24 hours
    to meet a deadline and then driving from office to the starting
    line.

    How about wearing your DEC badge if it's not a problem.  Maybe just
    around the starting area?  or at the dinner?  Goofy, I know!
    
    Anyway, as I've said, I'll be there, too
    
    I ride a grey Univega Viva Sport.  I have a blue saddle bag/wedge.  And
    at the dinner and the starting line I'll probably be with my wife who
    is 7 mo. with child.

I'll be there for the first time.  I'm staying at the Sheraton and porking 
out at the pasta-fest Friday.  I've got a light blue Cannondale, with all 
black accessories.  My V1-Pro has yellow reflective triangles on the front 
and back.

So, it this a hard ride?  Should I start training today?  :-)

How do you like those TV commercials?  I got e-mail from someone I don't know 
wanting to pledge because she couldn't bear to look at that little kid's 
face again unless she did something.  Her brother works with me and gave 
her my name.

    Okay, folks - it's history now.
    
    I finished on Saturday at around 1:45; could have used an aqualung at
    the brickyard at 80 miles and for about the next 20. Sunday morning I
    hit the P-Town Inn at 10:10. All told I was in the saddle for about 12
    hours (not counting breaks), and my Avocet told me I did 190 miles.
    
    This was a fantastic experience that I will repeat every year I'm still
    able to climb up onto the bike. Next year I'm thinking of riding a
    tandem with a friend.
    
    Definitely a good ride.

How was the ride?  Wet and fast!  Friday night several hundred crazy bikers
descended on Sturbridge, ate several tons of pasta, then packed themselves 4 to
a room.  We got up at 4:30 a.m.  on Saturday morning in Sturbridge to light
showers (not the ones in the bathroom) but thankfully the tempatures were warm.
Fellow riders said that last year the ride was during the heat-wave, so a cool,
damp ride was a welcome break.  At 6 a.m., in the murky light, we took off from
the Sturbridge Plaza, down Route 20, and up and down the hills of Central
Massachusetts.

This was the first rain in 10 years of the PMC.  But the first time I rode a
100 miles was during a real downpour, so Saturday's showers were easy.  We had
rest stops every 20 miles, which were a big help.  Just when I was starting to
wear out, there would be a sign saying "One mile to go." When we arrived at the
rest stops the volunteers cheered and clapped for every rider, giving a much
needed energy boost.

The wet roads kept us from drafting, unless we wanted a face full of muddy
water.  So when the traffic permitted we rode side by side, talking about
the ride, rain, and how far we had to go.  At the 80-mile rest stop, the
sun broke out, bright rays streaming through the continuing rain.
When the clouds shifted, the sun went away, and it poured buckets, along
with a little thunder and lighting.  Hard to believe, but I started feeling
really good as it warmed up, and the grit was being washed off my bike.

The day turned bright and sunny by the 100 mile mark because Cape Cod was spared
most of the rain.  More people cheered as we pulled into the Mass Maritime
Academy in Bourne, 110 miles, marking the end of the first day.  The ride
organizers had several dozen professional masseuses to rub our aching legs
and backs.  For this alone I will do the ride again next year!

The next morning reveille sounded at 4:15 a.m.  in the barracks, and I was off
at 5:20 a.m.  in the gray light before dawn.  We rode over the Bourne bridge to
the bike path that follows the Cape Cod Canal.  My knees were sore, my shoes
still wet, but watching the sun rise on a clear day gave me the energy to push
harder than Saturday.  Soon I was in a pace line of 20 riders and we hit the 20
mile stop in no time.  Eat, drink, then off with another pace line, and
sprinting every few miles to keep the pace hot.  "Remember", I yelled, "this is
not a race!" as 12 of us charged up and down the hills of the upper Cape.  It
may be an overgrown sandbar, but Cape Cod is NOT flat!

By riding in the fastest pace lines, and taking short rest stops, I was able to
catch up with some of the strongest riders.  I broke my wrist only a month
ago, but all my training paid off.  I was among the first 20 riders at the
finish line, thanks also to John Kowaleski, who pushed a group of us faster
than we thought possible, all the while singing sea shanties!  I arrived
at the Provincetown Inn at 9:40, and had only a short wait to use the one
shower provided for 700 men.

    The check presentation ceremony is going to be held on December 10 in
    Newton; was anyone else besides me crazy enough to sign up for the
    10-mile ride that day before the chowder-feed? That should generate
    some media coverage, especially if we have a blizzard ;-).

    I replies that I would ride, but I penned it in big letters "WEATHER
    PERMITTING".  I haven't riden in "awhile", but if it isn't too cold I'm
    crazy enough to join in.
