1080.0. "Delgado Really Did This?" by AMUN::CRITZ (A noid is annoyed) Mon Apr 03 1989 12:02

(From VeloNews, April 1, 1989, reprinted without permission)

A penitent Pedro Delgado, near tears at a press conference in

Barcelona, March 24, following the Semana Cataluna race, announced he

was relinquishing his drug-tainted 1988 Tour de France title. "I

screwed up big time," said Delgado through an interpreter. "I never

suffered from gout, and I should never have listened to the doctors

     who recommended taking steroids."

The Spanish star said he will travel to the Netherlands to personally

deliver the Tour yellow jersey and the keys to the vacation

condominium he won to runner-up Steven Rooks.

Delgado also revealed he will miss the Vuelta a Espana, his country's

national tour, later this month. He is said to be entering the Betty

Ford drug treatment center in palm Springs, California. If there are

no complications, Delgado hopes to return to racing at the Giro

d'Italia, starting May 21, with the expectation of finding top form

     for the Tour de France.

"I want to do it right this time," he added.

Yeah, and Mabelline is sponsoring a women's team. Right. Check the date on
the issue (3/31)... How 'bout April Fool!

    	Kevin,

Obviously, I knew the issue date (I even typed it in). My point
is, though, that they didn't use any smiley faces 8-)>, which
led me to believe it absolutely must be the straight poop.

    	Laughingly,
Scott (True, and Exxon will pay to completely restore Prince
    	       William Sound.)

The RUNNER mag once did a multi-page article on a women runner from Africa who
could run (barefoot even) a marathon in some incredible time, like sub 2:10 or
so. She had no interest in racing, tho they said they were trying to get her
to come to Boston. The story, tho incredible, sounded quite true. It had no
obvious smiley faces, but the 1st letter (always highlighted) of the
paragraphs begin major sections of the article spelled out 'april fool'. I
don't think too many folks figured it out, and they 'told the truth' in the
next issue. I'm expecting Velo-News to do the same.

Kevin

ps. I looked, but couldn't find, any 'secret' code that spelled out 'april
fool'. I bet one is there, tho.

Like the spring training walk-on, no-hit, no-walk pitcher that
Sports Ill. came up with a few years ago.

There doesn't need to be a secret message spelling out April Fool. It
was quite explicit. As was mentioned earlier, the date on the bottom of
the page was 4/1 while everywhere else it was 3/31. By the way, I actually
believed MOST of the stories until I read the one about Team Trojan. What
a concept!

    	Andy,

I felt the same way about the Trojan article. That seemed a
    	little too much for me.
