1074.0. "PLAN YOUR SUMMER VACATION - THE BICYCLING WAY" by AKOV11::FULLER () Thu Mar 30 1989 13:55

    Let's make this note for summer vacation tours. Although I won't
    be doing any tours this summer, due to a new addition to our household,
    I am sure that there are people thinking about what bicycling vacation
    to take. Also include tours that didn't fufill your expectations.

    Let me start:

    Tour:  Canadian Rockies
    Estimated time duration: 9 days to whatever time you can afford
    Lodging:  Either B&B or camping

    A couple of years ago my wife and I flew into Calgary and cycled to Banff,
    Lake Louise, and Jasper. If you have 10 to 14 days to spend on
    your bike (and hiking shoes) this is one of incredible beauty.
    The Icefield's Parkway, although traffic is steady, has no trucks
    allowed and has wide shoulders. Allow extra time for off-shoots such
    as Morraine Lake near Lake Louise. Highlight of the trip was finishing
    a 50ish mile ride to Lake Louise, relaxing in a hot tub with
    wine, then strolling over to Chateau Lake Louise for a massage,
    and finally taking a stroll around the lake at sunset (10 PM in
    summer). I can give more logistic details to anyone interested.

    Future dream vacations:

    o Mountain bike Colorado or Moab Utah

    o Pacific coast of Canada (Vancouver, Victoria Island)

    o  Scotland and Wales

1074.1WASHINGTON STATE SAMPLERBLKWDO::HUFFAKERSun Apr 02 1989 18:1421
    TOUR: WASHINGTON STATE SAMPLER
    WHEN: JUNE 30-JULY 8
    WHAT: ABOUT 550 MILES IN A LOOP STARTING AND ENDING AT SEATTLE. SOUTH
    THROUGH THE AREA AROUND MOUNT RAINER THEN WEST THROUGH THE VALLEYS THEN
    NORTH AND UP AND OVER THE NORTH CASCADES. I REALLY HOPE IT DOES NOT
    RAIN! 100 RIDER MAXIMUM. IT WILL BE A COOL BREAK FROM THE ARIZONA
    HEAT. EACH YEAR FOR THE PAST 5 I DO THE "ALMOST ACROSS ARIZONA TOUR"
    (500-560 MILES) AND I REALLY ENJOY IT. THESE ARE NOT SELF CONTAINED
    (DUFFLE BAG ON THE TRUCK EACH MORNING) BUT THEY ARE MOSTLY CAMPING
    TOURS. THAT WAY YOU DONT HAVE TO LUG YOUR STUFF UP ALL THE MOUNTAIN
    PASSES. A LOT OF PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE U.S. AND EUROPE ARE ON THESE
    RIDES SO YOU MAKE MANY NICE FRIENDS. THESE ARE NOT HEAVILY SUPPORTED
    RIDES (WASHINGTON STATE RIDE IS RUN BY ONE FAMILY) AND THEY ARE CHEAP
    ($175-$225). THAT INCLUDES A BAGGAGE TRUCK MAYBE, MAYBE A SAG VAN, A
    FEW MEALS (DINNERS MOSTLY) CAMPING PERMITS AND SHOWER FACILITIES (MOST
    OF THE TIME, HOT SOME OF THE TIME). GREAT COUNTRY, CLIMBS, DOWNHILLS
    AND PEOPLE. YOU USUALLY RIDE 50-70 MILES A DAY SO YOU HAVE TIME TO
    STOP AND LOOK AROUND. SO FOR ONE WEEK THIS SUMMER WHEN IT WILL BE
    110-115 DEGREES IN THE PHOENIX AREA I WILL BE IN THE COOL (AND
    HOPEFULLY DRY) PACIFIC NORTHWEST.

    	Typing in all caps is considered SHOUTING in notes. It's
    	also very hard on the eyes.

    	Thanks,

1074.3Touring Europe ?RTL::OXENBERGMon Apr 24 1989 17:2711
I'm looking for biking companion(s) to accompany me on all or part of an
extended (3 months or more or less) bicycle trip of Europe. AT this time the
itinerary is loose as are the starting dates. I'm thinking of beginning in
early July. This would be a do it yourself trip, we do all the planning and
there are no sag wagons.

If you have any interest in this, please send mail to adt::oxenberg or call me
at home (and leave a message) at 617-891-6377.

1074.4MOAB - MTB heaven!CXCAD::EDMONDSThu Apr 27 1989 13:2111
    If anyone wants some info on mountain-biking in the Moab, Utah,
    area, I'd be happy to help out. My husband & I just returned from
    a trip over there. We've gone every spring & fall for the last
    three years or so.

    It's a fantastic place to ride. There's all kinds of trails and
    4-wheel-drive roads to explore the Canyonlands area; lots of arches
    and cliffs and other amazing scenery.

    I wouldn't recommend it for a SUMMER vacation, though, unless you
    like riding in 100+ degree temperatures!
