1070.1 | I think I know this operation | AKOV11::FULLER | | Wed Mar 29 1989 14:02 | 7 |
| I believe the founder is Jim Milberg (sp), former worker at Chris
Chance (Fat City) Cycles in Somerville. Jim is an experienced tourist,
I have seen slides shows of his personal tours. Real nice guy.
I heard of this operation he was starting a few years ago, it appears
to be thriving.

1070.2 | Easy Rider Tours are good, but consider the AMC | MARKER::WARD | | Wed Mar 29 1989 15:56 | 14 |
| It's Jim Goldberg, and I think he's based in Arlington. I know
Jim and he is both a nice guy and an excellent mechanic who did
indeed work for Chris Chance. He has bicycled cross-country
and is indeed well qualified to lead those tours.
The trips are expensive, but would be a good introduction. However,
you can see many of the same places for a fraction of the cost on
Appalachian Mountain Club tours, where leadership is provided for
free or nominal cost.
If you're not familiar with the AMC, you can see their bulletin,
"Appalachia," in many town libraries. It lists upcoming trips.

| RE: 1070.2 Thanks for the correction, I haven't seen Jim in years
and forgot his name.
Another idea:
If you are looking for a long weekend biking activity that includes
a thousand plus cyclists try one of the LAW events such as the
one coming up in Maryland. I don't have the schedule with me, does
anyone else? NEAR (New England Area Rally) to be held in Conn.
this year is another option.
Also,
You can't beat the riding companionship and friends developed
through a local bicycle club! Most clubs have weekend trips that are
economical and fun.

The next GEAR (sponsered by LAW) will be held this June 16-19 in
Saratoga Springs NY. I will be there. They expect thousands of riders.

1070.5 | Irish trip by EASY RIDER | ISLNDS::BURKE | | Thu Mar 30 1989 13:25 | 9 |
| Thanks for the response.
I went to a lecture given by Jim and was impressed by his discussion
of upcoming trips. He's offering a two week trip to Ireland for
$1800, to tour the west country. It's expensive but it looks like
he has put a lot of time into planning. He will also have a support
van to carry luggage, etc. I'm thinking of going; how does the
cost compare with similar tours? The only other deterrent is the
Irish weather. Overall it sounds great.

I went on this trip last year. It *was* great! As far as cost goes,
it was the cheapest European trip I could find then. I'm getting catalogs
from the companies I contacted last year, and I believe it still is cheaper.
The weather wasn't wonderful, but, after all, you need something to justify
that extra pint of Smithwicks! (Pronouced "Smitticks :-). One thing that helped
me a lot was leather touring shoes, instead of nylon/fabric shoes, as they
dried out much faster :-)
