1030.1 | Is it frame flex and not shifter? | CUJO::LEBLANC | uppers are downers and downers are uppers | Wed Mar 08 1989 11:17 | 10 |

What frame is this derailleur on? Some friends have had this problem
on Vitus frames. Especially if the frame is large or they are strong sprinters
or hill climbers. It is due to flex in the rear drop-out/chain stays. Flex
in this area of the frame means that the derailleur will not stay aligned.

One might indeed suspect frame-flex. Well, it's a Columbus SLX 52cm
De Rosa frame... so you'd think it would be small & stiff enough.
Might that still be the problem, though? Should I spin more on
hills?

1030.3 | Try this | BANZAI::FISHER | Rdb/VMS Dinosaur | Wed Mar 08 1989 11:39 | 15 |
| Didn't I tell you that I have a pair of C-record shifters that did
that and are now sitting in a drawer because I could not solve
the problem? I also have a pair which works properly -- they must
have noticed their predecessors' predicament.
There are 2 brass washers between the friction thing and the shifter
arm. They are not quite flat. I think it makes a difference how
they are oriented with respect to each other. In the first case,
nothing worked, for the second pair, I think I put their concave
faces toward each other.
Maybe its fatigue? They would rather sit in a drawer than look
forward to a spring-summer&fall of double centuries.

| Magnifico ... credo. I've walked over to the bike, and sure
enough, there are two silver-colored (not brass) concave washers
on the outside of the lever, and they were oriented the same way
- now they're facing each other.
Time for a lunch ride to test this out. These shifters may have
to bear the brunt of merciless riding yet! :-)
