1012.0. "7 speed bites seat stay" by MCIS2::DELORIEA (Common sense isn't) Fri Feb 24 1989 10:02

I have up graded my Centurion from Shimano Light Action to 600 Ultegra. In the
process I picked up an Ultra 7 freewheel. After setting it all up and putting
the 7 on the wheel I ran through the gears. In the lowest tooth cog the chain
bit into the frames seat-stay. Is there a spacer in the wheel that I need or
do I need a frame with thinner seat-stays where it meets the dropouts?

On another note, the front derailleur works SO SMOOTH compared with others.
I also got rid of my BIO-Pace crank and got a Campy Chorus crank and BB.
The thing spins better than some wheels. I thought I was paying for just a
name ;-)

    I can't help with the problem, but I concur with the Campy plug.
    I'm a first time Campy user - got 500+ new mile on my Chorus gruppo
    and you're right as rain!

1012.2When is a 6-speed not a 6-speedMEMORY::GOODWINin a spasm of lucidity...Fri Feb 24 1989 16:057
    Your Centurion might have an ultra 6 freewheel to fit the narrower
    spacing for the rear axle which is normal for a 5-speed. If this
    is the case you cannot use the ultra 7. I forget the actual spacings
    but if you have a Nashbar Catalog around it usually has the dimensions
    in the freewheel section.

	Depends (of course). It sounds as if the top cog is too far
	to the right relative to the cone lock nut (or its functional
	equivalent, I don't know what kind of hubs these are). On
	con_ven_shun_al hubs I'd look to add an extra lock nut on the right
	side, may have to remove one from the left - or add a thick spacing
	washer or three between the cone and the lock nut, or ...etc.
	Whatever you do it will probably necessitate redishing the wheel, the
	rim is centered between the lock nuts, remember ???

    Nope, I thought the same thing, but I used a Dura-ace cassette wheel that
had a six speed on it and pulled the 6 off and put on the ultra 7. the wheel
fit into the frame fine.

1012.5just add a spacer !SVCRUS::CRANESun Feb 26 1989 20:479

       I had the same problem you have when i bought a bike for winter
    riding last year. When I would put the wheel that fit my racing
    bike on the winter bike I could not use the smallest cog because
    the chain hit on the seat stay. I brought the bike down to the shop
    and they added a spacer and everthing was just fine.

RE>>                            -< just add a spacer ! >-

      Ya, That's what I'll have to do. I just didn't think with a cassette
wheel I would have this problem. I looked at a Basso frame set and the wheel
could work without the spacer. A little more expensive than the spacer though.

	I did!!! Hey isn't that what you're supposed to do with your tax
refunds. Its the Paris Roubaix frame SL main tubes CoMo stays. Its white with
blue BASSO logo on the seat and down tubes the chain stays are crome as well as
the SL fork. I got it for $400 with a Stonglite(sp) roller bearing head set.
I'll put on the Campy Chorus crank with the Shimano 600 ultegra shifters +
brakes, Dura-Ace - Mavic tubular aero wheel set and of course I have to have a
Chorus AERO seat post. ( on those +60 mph rides)

I put it all together last night, adjusted everything and took it for ride.
WOW, light and fast. Also, I got the Chorus seat post at NASHBAR mail order and
it came all scratched. I returned it to NASHBAR in Needham at lunch and I
swapped it with the one they had in the showcase. I checked to see if it was
scratched , it wasn't. When I got back to work I looked at it closer and I
noticed it was not the same. It didn't have ribs in the inside and it had a
micro-adjust clamp. I guess they made a mistake and gave me a Record C??

I can't wait to ride w/o five layers of clothes.
