1011.0. "Oh No, BLOOD CLOT!" by BTO::MANDILE_A () Fri Feb 24 1989 09:04
I have enjoyed the sport if cycling for about ten years. A
year ago I decided to run on a treadmill, instead of riding a exercise
bike at my gym....I dont have a runners body (5'11 200 lbs, very
little fat), any way after running hard for a half hour, I stopped
I never have used running as part of my workout. That nite I got
a excessive pain in my left leg, to make a long story short, a week
later (after massive swelling and pain) I went to the hospital,
and was diagnosed as having a deep vein thrombosis, or in english
a blood clot in my whole left leg......
After blood thinners, and
vitamin megga dosing my leg is about 75 to 80% of normal, when
Cycling.....I am 26 years old, and want as close 100% power as I
can get from my leg, I love cycling (sport touring, time trials,
and mountain biking), and I want to cycle till the day I die.
So.....the reason for my note is to see if anybody else out there
has been touched by the same unfortunate stroke of luck, and if
you can give me any advice on rehab/drugs to help my problem.
I still average 350 to 400 miles a week (thank God!!)
Thanx in advance,
Albert

Maybe conference GUMMO::MEDICAL could help.

1011.2 | What are you like when you're healthy? | WEA::BUCHANAN | Bat | Fri Feb 24 1989 12:28 | 4 |
| You're in rehab from a fairly serious injury, it's the middle of winter and
you're still getting in 350 to 400 miles per week!
Sounds like you're already doing better than 95% of us now.

| Did the doctor relate the clotting to anything specific? The reason
I ask is the wife (she'd enjoy my calling her that) has had clots
in her legs. She will almost always go to specialists at The Mary
Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, N.H. (Dartmouth College).
They recommended exercise for the obvious, improved blood circulation.
Cycling, swimming and jogging are the obvious suggestions. They
were very explicit about avoiding massages and rubdowns, though.
Under no circumstances was she to partake in these activities
(can you imagine - those things are almost as good as sex). The
moral of the story is she bikes with me a lot and has only had
improvement in her legs and feels great. That's all know. Hope
it helps.

1011.4 | Mistake | BTO::MANDILE_A | | Tue Feb 28 1989 20:08 | 7 |
| re:-2
Yes, thhat was a major mistake on my weekly mileage, instead of
400 a week, it should be 400 a month......a major mistake.
Thanx for the blood clot info,
Albert

1011.5 | Similar Experience | LAGUNA::BARTHOLOM_RI | | Fri Mar 03 1989 15:12 | 24 |
| I had a similar problem about five years ago. Did it while doing
some leg extensions with a fairly (too heavy) weight for my
conditioning. Also ended up in the hospital on blood thinners.
My personal heresy is to get back to training like you did! My
doctors at the time wanted me to advoid exercise, long drives, etc.
So much for doctors wanting us to get better! I have been gradually
getting the swelling down with my own fitness program-weights,
lifecycle, bicycle outdoors, etc. I took a look at my venograms
when it happened and can see how I lost the valves which are in
some of the veins which tend to fight gravity (we weren't designed
to stand upright) which is what causes the swelling even after five
years. I have noticed that my right leg is more swollen after days
I am on my feet doing presentations which are stressful (I am in
sales) but after a good nights sleep leg is back to normal. Would
recommend support stocking on that leg. Never made it work for
me (can't keep it up-stocking!) and haven't tried garters, etc.
I also take an aspirin a day. One of the reason it occured with
me was that I have a short clotting time-great in the days when
we lived in the jungle and were bitten by saber toothed tigers but
bad from a cardiac stand point where any hurt to a vein or artery
starts a clotting response. That is why they give the blood medication
and that is why I take the aspirin. I also think that I should
have taken more pains to warm-up and stretch before working out!
