1000.0. "Topic Contest for this Topic" by KUDZU::ELLIS (John Lee Ellis - assembly required) Sun Feb 19 1989 07:50

What would be a worthy theme to commemorate the thousandth topic?
Many candidates ran through my mind:

       - Relative Merits of Indexed Shifting vs. Tubulars?

       - Scott Handlebars with Right-Hand Brake Levers??

       - LOOK Pedals and Aero Seatposts - a Lethal Combination???

       - Mt. Watchusett - Sleeping Giant on our Doorstep????

Frankly, all of these issues need discussing, and I'm sure they
will be, in the open, free-wheeling manner characteristic of this
    conference. I can hardly wait!

Meanwhile, how about holding a Topic Contest here in this note?

How about Long Trips That I've Gone on? I have never done more than
20 miles (1/5 century) in a day an I love to read about really long
trips. I've never believed that the RAM really takes place I think
it really takes like 4 months and its all edited down to 10 days.

    TOPIC: Right-Leggedness

ABSTRACT: Recently, I've noticed an alarming disparity between
the size and strength of my legs. When I thought about it a
little, I finally realized that I nearly always lead with my
right leg, whether from a sprint or a standing start. When
I have to take a foot out of a pedal at a traffic light, it's
always the left one. I also seem to drive my out-of-the-saddle
      climbs with my right leg.

One would think that bicycle riding would encourage symmetrical
muscle development, but toeclips and cleats allow one leg to
"cheat" and work through the whole stroke. Ultimately, the
disparity could get worse, as the dominant leg gets a greater
      proportion of muscle development.

Is this a problem? If so, how can it be corrected?

"If Campagnolo made a C-Record Kickstand, would you use it?"
1000.4Second vote for the kickstand!IAMOK::WESTERMon Feb 20 1989 08:402
My vote is for .3, C-record kickstands. Good one JD! No bike is
complete without that aero seatpost, or campy kickstand!
1000.5Where can I buy one?CESARE::JOHNSONWanted to be an astronaut, but settled for space cadet.Mon Feb 20 1989 10:587
Better yet, JD's suggestion solves the right-leggedness problem.
A kickstand would be on the left side of the bike, so the left leg
could get more exercise raising and lowering it. A C-Record
kickstand just might provide that "margin of difference" needed to
    equalize things....

re .0	Don't worry, in the tradition of certain "Other conferences"
this one is following tradition by using high numbered topics to commemorate
JUNK. Wait and see what happens when we get up to 1024 :-^)

re .2	If you're serious about this please start another topic.
I'd like to discuss it, but not here (see above).

RE: .3: Only if it's aero. it would have to lower my left
heel's temperature by 1C before I would plunk plastic down for
    it.
