989.0. "Mavic components" by CURIE::HUPPERT () Mon Feb 06 1989 11:49

I'm in the process of deciding on a new bike and components.
Right now the bike of choice is a Marinoni, and the components are
    a mixture of stuff.

Although rarely seen on bikes, it seems that Mavic makes some real
fine components which are somewhat unique. The Mavic components
which interest me are their hubs, sealed bottom bracket, and
    headset.

Can anyone out there comment on these? Does anyone know what
cranksets/derailleur combinations the Mavic bottom bracket has
    compatibility with?

Not sure of compatability, but the latest Performance Bike Shop
catalog has a new section devoted to entire Groups from Campy,
Shimano, Suntour and Mavic. It might be worth while to pick
one up and run some comparisons on the specs.

These parts you mention are real common in the racing community
'round here. Toronto area that is.. I have all three of these parts
on one of my bikes.
About 2 in 3 bikes in my club have the hubs. They are known as BOMB
proof. All you need to do if/when the bearings wear out is pop out the
old sealed bearings and pop in new ones. These hubs aint quite as
fast or as light as Campy but are very rugged and make excellant
hubs for training wheels.
I have had no problems with the 'cassette' bottom bracket bearings.
I talked to a bike mechanic who took an older one apart. He saw no sign
of any wear what-so-ever (impressive eh). When you install this
aluminum part in a steel, moly or cast bottom bracket shell make sure
you coat the whole cassette with lots of grease to stop the aluminum
to iron bonding.
I love the smooth refined look of the Mavic headset. Had nor heard
of no problems with this baby either. Dont let anyone tell you this
is a cheap aluminum headset its got steel races and should last a
long time.
I have seen the bottom bracket work with Mavic, Campy and Suntour
derailleurs and cranks, I'm sure there's lots more I just havent noticed.

Does anybody have any updates on this discussion? I'm looking at
getting a Mavic BB and crank.

    Thanks
