The chain rings have a hinged section that is shifted into place
by the electricaly operated shift mechanism that takes the place
of the front derailleur. Instead of the normal system where a
metal plate is pushed against the chain to deflect it into the
path of the moving gears, the section of gear reaches out and
positions itself to grab the chain. The chain is always fully
engaged with the moving gears and thus there is no slip and
noise associated wittuderailleurs. The B.A.T. can shift under
full load because it does not rely on deflecting the chain (which
is harder under load).
