875.0. "21 speeds from Shimano for ATBs" by BRAT::SMITH (Never say never, I always say.) Thu Sep 22 1988 08:42
On many 1989 Mountain Bikes we should see 21 gears! Shimano's
new Deore XT-II and Deore II group will appear with 7-speed
Hyper-Glide gearing. The rear hub is 135mm wide (5mm wider
than the 6-speed one), and a narrow Uni-Glide-style chain is
needed. Other goodies from Shimano for '89 are shorty brake
levers (2-finger size), new seatpost and headset, the afore-
mentioned hub and chain, and slicker cables. The '89 Shimano
off-road lineup is Deore XT-II, Deore II, Mountain LX, Exage
Mountain, Exage Trail, and Exage Country.

875.1 | And you can shift "under load" | BRAT::SMITH | Never say never, I always say. | Thu Dec 29 1988 23:17 | 7 |
| And: With the "hyper-glide" setup, Shimano says you can shift
under load, such as while you're climbing a hill. Apparently
the gears are cut in such a way as to facilitate this, so you
can shift under load without damaging the gears or chain.
