Started a note on LAW patches, turned into a new note on the League
of American Wheelmen, the national association of bicyclists.
Much detail information is in the "BICYCLE USA ALMANAC", including
info on Patches, Touring (Information request form), hospitality
homes, Touring information by state, local club listings, national
and local rides and rallies, effective cycling instructors, and
local dealers. LAW members receive the Almanac, it is the December
issue the the League magazine, "Bicycle USA".
The League does a great deal of work within the educational and
legislative domains, areas which are much needed to insure a future
for cycling. Patches, local club assistance, roads, touring and
ATBs, general interest, are other areas.
Some of these areas could be replys to this note (feel free).
PATCHES:
The League of American Wheelmen [Suite 209, 6707 Whitestone Road,
Baltimore, MD 21207; 301/944-3399] stocks patches for many different
"accomplishments". The patch contact there is Bob Bassin.
Patches include:
National 100/62/50/25 (events held from Sept 1 thru mid Oct.)
Sanctioned 100/62/50/25 (events not held from Sept 1 thru mid Oct.)
(metric century = 100 Kilometers = ~62 miles)
L.A.W. member, New Years day ride, Sag Wagon Driver, Ride Leader,
Easter ride, July 4 ride, Valentines Day ride, St. Patricks day
ride, Patch Designer patch, Dog Patch, Ice Cream Ride, Labor Day
ride, Roller, Double Metric Century, Double Century, Memorial Day
ride, Bicycle USA, Thanksgiving ride, Christmas day ride, Halloween
ride, Rain, I Love Cycling, Volunteer, Wind.
Most patches are dated with the year (new design each year).
Except for Sanctioned ride patches, anyone may buy patches directly
from the League for $2.00 enclosed with the order per patch; they
may require a paragraph describing the ride. Orders for less than 5
patches also require $1.00 for postage and handling.
Sanctioned patched may be ordered only by L.A.W. affiliated clubs.
Such clubs may order on consignment, 50% deposit required if the
order is for more than 249 patches.
*Warning, Plug ahead:
BTW, Charles River Wheelmen is the only large club which is 100%,
meaning that if you Join CRW your dues include membership in LAW (at
a total cost which is less than joining most local clubs and the
League. [CRW individual membership is $26.00, LAW is $22.]

| Bicycling magazine reports the following benefit when joing the LAW:
If you order tickets through the Sports National Reservation Center
(a full service travel agency that guarantees low prices), LAW riders
receive passes for free bike transport on the TWA, American West,
USAir, and Northwest Airlines. This could save $50-$90.
An annual LAW membership is $24. Call 410/539-3399.
