843.0. "Let's ride the Kancamagus" by HOMBAS::BELISLE () Wed Aug 31 1988 10:20

    	I just had a wild brain storm, sitting in my office looking
    over at my accomplishments so far this year. Think, am I strong
    enought to ride the Kancamagus Hwy this year. I haven't tried in
    3 years, is it time to try again?

    	Well, I think I'm going too. I'ld like to make the ride on a
    weekday, preferably a sunny one. I know it's about 65/70 miles both
    ways starting in Lincoln and ending in Conway and then leaving Conway
    and returning to Lincoln. Should only take about 3/4Hrs to accomplish.

    	Well, I guess what I'm tring to get at is, is there anybody
    out there that wouldn't mine take a day off and riding with me?
    I plan on leaving around 6/7am and getting up there around 10/11am,
    eat lunch/ride/eat dinner/drive back home, get home around 8pm.
    All times are open for negotiation.

    	I figure it time to ride that monster of a hill. I also would
    like to ride sometime within the next three weeks (Before Sept.23rd).

     Any takers?

    Regards;
    Mike

843.1Why not a loop.AITG::HUBERMANWed Aug 31 1988 11:083
    Why don't you do a loop, Kancamagus to rt 3 to 302 to Bear Notch
    Rd?  about 85 miles.

	Do the Kancamagus west to East if you are doing a loop.
	The west side has a few switchbacks where the East side
	allows a straighter descent. (Put on your jacket and knee
	warmers at the top too.)

    the west side has places where you can upshift, too. I never feel
    like upshifting when I'm climbing the east slope even though our
    highway engineers claim the slope's steeper on the west side. (9%
    west, 7% east).

843.5East side not bad!AITG::HUBERMANWed Aug 31 1988 15:263
    I've ridden up the east side. It wasn't too bad. The west side
    has a greater elevation gain and looked more difficult to me.

    	I knew this wasn't going to easy.. Wednesday's are school night
    for me. Is Wednesday's the only day you could make it? The earliest
    I'ld be able to do it would be Thursday Sept. 8th.. All Wednesday's
    and Friday's are out for me. So we'ld have to do it Mon, Tue or
    Thurs..
    	Let's plan for Sept. 8th, everyone who is will to do the ride,
    please send me E-Mail. I'll coordinate this event and back to you
    on any changes..

    	Right now everything is negotiable.

I think Ed means the Kanc (112)-Bear Notch Rd-302-3-18-116-112.  That's a
great route...we did it in June. I could be tempted...
