I am participating in the "Autumn Escape Bicycle Trek" on Sept 9, 10 and 11. This is a three day bike trek covering 150 miles. The purpose of the trek is to raise money for the American Lung Association. Currently the Lung Association has lots of good programs. They are doing great work educating adults and children about the dangers of smoking; as well as offering seminars and support groups for those smokers trying to kick the habit. (That's good news for us nonsmokers are tired of breathing other people's smoke.) They also provide programs for asthmatic children and adults, support groups for people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and have a large selection of materials available on such topics as second-hand smoke, smoking and pregnancy, air pollution, etc. Well, you've probably already guessed it; now I am going to ask for money. To participate in the Trek, I must raise a minimum of $350.00, but my goal is to raise $500.00 and have Dec match that for a cool thousand. If you would like to make a pledge (please oh please) there are lots of ways you can do so. For pledges greater than $10.00; just send me your address and pledge amount Vaxmail and I'll fill out the pledge sheet and have the Lung Association bill you directly. If you would prefer to pay up front, (this will make the Lung Association happy because it is a lot less expensive for them) you can send me your pledge amount and I will send it on to the Lung Association. Digital will match any pledge over $15.00. All you need to do is fill out a Matching Gift form. Please include that with your payment whether you are sending your contribution to me or to the Lung Association. (Don't worry about filling the address in, just make sure you sign it.) Thanks for your support - (Oh no, I sound like a Bartles and James commercial - yuk!) Nancy Gabriel WJO::GABRIEL Mailstop - WJO1/D11 DTN - 282-1299

841.1 | I going on one this weekend | BRAT::SMITH | Never say never, I always say. | Mon Sep 12 1988 19:26 | 13 |
Nancy, So how was the Trek? I'm going on one for the American Lung Association of New Hampshire this weekend (Sep 16-18), called the 1988 Granite State Fall Bike Trek. They have two every year. One in the Spring and one in the Fall. This will be my first one. I'm going to use my Mountain Bike, although I replaced the Ritchey Force knobbies with Specialized Fatboys (road slicks) to make the bike a little more "road worthy". Mountain Bike Mike
841.2 | You'll have a great weekend! | CSMADM::GABRIEL | Thu Sep 15 1988 10:01 | 18
Mountain Bike Mike, The Lung Association trek was great fun! The riding on the Cape was really nice and we had great weather. The event was extremely well organized. There was plenty of time to complete the cycling and to socialize. We stayed at a YMCA camp that was located on a lake and had canoes, sun fishes, a volley ball setup, etc. I was also surprised at how good the food was (lobster dinner Sat night!). But, the best part was the people...the organizers and participants were all very friendly, and just generally nice people. I would say you should look forward to a very enjoyable weekend. (I don't think doing it on a mountain bike will be a problem - if its 150 miles in 3 days.) Nancy |
