807.0. "Maintenance after a Ride in the Rain" by MCIS2::NORTON () Tue Aug 02 1988 11:05

I rode a century+ on Sunday, most of it either in the rain or on
wet roads. Aside from giving my bike a good bath afterwards, what
should I do for post-rain maintenance?

During the course of the ride, my bike started making some noise
that seemed to be coming from the bottom bracket (which is less
than 2 months old). I haven't had a chance to ride again yet, so
I don't know whether it's dried out and quieted down yet. Should
I do something to my bottom bracket every time I get stuck in the
rain? Is there any routine maintenance that should be done after
    riding in the rain?

    Thanks,
    Kathy

This noise could be from either a) the crank bolts loosening up or b)
the bottom bracket coming loose, or c) something else entirely. If it is
either a) or b) fix it before riding again, ABSOLUTELY. In the case of
a) a few HOURS riding can destroy your crank arms, and in the case of b)
a few HOURS riding can destroy the bottom bracket shell (i.e. your
frame). This is actually quite common for almost-new BB's and cranksets,
they seem to work loose a few hundred/thousand miles after installation
until they get "seated" right. This in fact happened to me recently with
a used (but very low mileage) Eisentraut that I just acquired - the
crank arms have loosened a couple times, but now seem to be settling in.

Of course, if it's option c) ignore the above :-).

re .0	If it does it with the chain off then its BB or pedals,
not much else down there. If its pedals that should be fairly obvious,
if its BB you should be able to take it back [to George, right ?]
If its crank arms against the BB spindle you should still be able
to take it back (service person induced problem). If you'd like
me to look it over just call, you ARE riding to work in this heat
everyday, aren't you ? or tuck it in the car, we can look at lunch
    time.
